    Re: Help with upgrade, please

You can also drill a small hole on the bottom (treble) side of the neck heel and install a strap button there.

    Re: Ella Recording

My understanding is that it was on loan to Andrew from John's widow. Ella was John's personal mandolin.

Andrew owns another Sullivan, but it's an F5. You can hear it on their YouTube vid for...

    Re: String recommendations

My Eastman 315 seemed to really like the Siminoff Straight up sets. The E and A courses tended to have a bit much bite for my ears, and the Siminoff's had a great balance.

    Re: Help with upgrade, please

If you can make the drive to Eugene, McKenzie River Music has an Eastman 305 on their website ($509) and a Flatiron 1N Flattop ($595). They also have a higher zoot Eastman and a couple Collings so...

Re: James tailpiece on a Northfield F5S?

Just heard back from Derek of Northfield on this.

The James tailpieces are way behind schedule in manufacturing and they don't expect more anytime soon.
They are not a direct replacement -...

    Re: Stringwinder's for mando

I just got a Wildwood String Winder from Durl Jones in Colorado.

Works superbly and looks great! String changes are much easier now without rapping my knuckles on the adjacent tuner buttons or...
  10. Re: Mandolin Recommendations - Beginner to Intermediate

If you are willing to drive a bit, there is an Eastman 505 at Dusty Strings in Seattle ($745 + tax), and an Eastman 305 a Mackenzie River Music in Eugene ($509 - no sales tax). Might be worth a tank...

Thanks for that, but you might want to shift the camera a bit so your fretting hand can be seen

Re: James tailpiece on a Northfield F5S?

Chuck - you might want to reach out on FB or IG. Emails I've sent in the past have gone unanswered for quite a while.
  14. Re: Buying my first Mandolin- Equipment questions

Hopefully not being too obvious, but the bridge on a mandolin is not attached to the top like it is on an acoustic guitar. Change the strings one or two at a time, as they are the only thing holding...

Re: James tailpiece on a Northfield F5S?

I'm such an idiot. Eyeballing the two and taking some rough measurements, it appears to be a direct drop-in (excepting the jack drilling). I'll leave it to one of our luthier members (or...

Re: James tailpiece on a Northfield F5S?

Interested in this as well. The stock tailpiece is ok, but once I got my Kimble, I realized how much easier string changes are with the James.

I'd need to have one drilled out for a K&K jack,...

Re: A Newcomer to Mandolin Asks the Experts

MandoLessons.com - Baron has recently relocated to the PDX area, so that may be an option for local lessons. In the meantime, the site has a ton of good beginner content and a whole lot of fiddle...

    Re: Newbie needs equipment advice

Congrats! I think you chose wisely. Make sure the instrument is set up properly (either from the seller or from a shop).

While you should definitely look for an in-person instructor, you can...

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

Probably can't go wrong with any of the instruments listed. I was able to play all of those (except a Kelly) as well as Gibsons, Northfields and others, in one splendid afternoon at Fiddlers last...

Re: Northfield is simply nailing it lately

Not sure what's 'fragile' about a 1/2" thick piece of maple....

I wouldn't use it to hammer a nail, but frankly, it would probably work ok for that. Love my F5S like my children.

    As for the...

    Re: Strap Recommendation

    I have one each:

    Lakota (braided elk)
    Sully's (flat saddle leather)
    Little Satchel (braided kangaroo)

All three are great. None are cheap. Current fave is the Little Satchel.
