Re: Keeping up with the Fiddlers

One thing that may help you relax is understanding that mistakes happen to everybody, they go by quickly, and should be forgotten quickly. Try to learn to let 'em go by with a laugh and focus on...

    Re: Used gouges... (or new)?

Hyperkitten Tool Company sells good quality "worker" hand tools on the internet, gouges included. NFI, I just appreciate accurate descriptions of old hand tools and doing business with good people.
  3. Re: Browns Ferry Blues-posted today, loaded with living icons

Pretty cool, right down to the Jimmy Martin ending!
  4. Re: Hopefully better questions about Brazilian Rosewood

First, it's almost always folly to try to ID wood species from a photo on the internet.
Second, I've never seen a raw BRW billet or board. But dang, that photo sure reminds me of the cherry...

Re: Carolina Quartet & Persimmon fittings

It's a cool idea - a bowling ball vise - but the sunburst finish is a nice touch! I would imagine that making it the ideal height for you was key.

    Re: RIP Tom Smothers

One of the best Christmas gifts I received in recent years is a DVD of old Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour shows. Their comedic timing and delivery was impeccable, and they had the brass to speak truth...

    Re: RIP Frank Ford

Frets.com helped me understand much about not only stringed instruments, but problem-solving in general. He was generous with his time and expertise, and I will treasure the one "Frank's Crank" I...

    Re: Thermalwood

American persimmon is a native North American species in the same genus as ebony, with a slightly lower Janka hardness. I would think if it could be successfully "ebonized" it would make a more...

Re: 10 Mandolin Players SOLO on the SAME Tune

Lots to steal there, like trying to drink from a fire hose . . . plus Bill Cheatham is one of my favorite joyful fiddle tunes.

Re: Tunes that lend themselves to tremolo

Hymn tunes. I sometimes play a hymn tune as a prelude to the service and it almost always requires me to play some (often a LOT) of tremolo. If fact, it has been the single most consistent source of...

Re: Post a picture of what's on your bench?

If nobody else is gonna bite, I sure will. What's the surprise? It's hollow? It's really CF but looks like maple?

Re: 90% of us can’t do this.

I think the premise is a myth. It's not difficult to smile while playing - I often smile when I connect with whomever I'm collaborating with, or when I flub something. It's a natural reaction.

Re: Second chord in Old Home Place

My guess is that different people hear different things and sometimes that comes through when they cover a song.

For example, when Emmy Lou covered The Boxer she sang (and I believe printed in...
  17. Re: Testing TSA this weekend with Klos Travel Guitar

Not an issue with me, never had trouble with putting my mandolin in the overhead compartment. This, IMHO, is one of the sparkling advantages of playing mandolin. I also play guitar, and I won't risk...

    Re: Briliancy done right

Interesting to hear Howdy's original version, but to my ear it's a little scratchy and pitchy and not quite as tight as I expected.

I still like Sam's (somewhat flashy) version a little better. ...

One thing that helps me (YMMV) is to optimize the work area - I use my bench in my workshop which is 34" high, a convenient height for me to stand and work. I cover it with a moving blanket and use...

    Re: Tonedexter question....

I use it with both. You do need to download the HGH version, but that version handles both guitar and mandolin.

Guitar is stored in wave maps nos 1 - 11 and mandolin is stored in nos 12 - 22....
