Re: Mandolin will not stay in tune

Personally, I would put Mediums on, as they give a better tone than lights on an F5, but that is just my preference.

Seeing as the strings are already 3 months old, I would suggest it is time to...

    Re: Informal Poll

If I had the cash, I would certainly have no problem buying a mandolin north of 10K.
I have no fear of expensive instruments.

My dream mandolins are Nugget, Ellis, and Gilchrist.
    I could...

    Re: online jamming?

As stated above, latency makes it very difficult to jam with others online, and latency gets worse the farther apart the musicians are.
There are services/software that claim it works OK, and many...

    Re: D'Addario picks?

    Good to know. Thanks.
I am used to BlueChips, which seem bullet proof.

    Re: D'Addario picks?

It is worth every penny, as are the BlueChips which are $10 more.
I am going to buy two more, one for my case, one for my pocket.
    Cool pick.
  6. Re: D'Addario's new Chris Thile signature mandolin pick

Just got one of these, and I really like it.
I usually use a BlueChip CT55, and love it, but this D'addario casein pick is great too.

The D'addario is a bit brighter in tone, which works...

    Re: JBovier

Yup, they are very good mandolins, especially for the price.
My first good mandolin was a J Bovier F5 Special.
It is very nicely built, with lovely flame maple back and sides.
    I don't play it...
  8. Re: If you think changing strings on a mandolin is a pain...

Try changing strings on my sitar sometime!!
A string change on a mandolin takes me about 10 minutes.
A string change on my sitar takes an evening.

19 strings, and all wooden friction pegs.
    No...

Re: Gibson EM-1235 with TWO MANDOLIN NECKS

    That is pretty cool.
I dont know about $149K, but it is certainly unique.

    Re: Blue Chips

If they stay with your mandolin, they will always be there.
Stick the pick under the strings when you put the mando in the case.

If you need to have a pick with you, then buy some cheaper picks...

    Re: 7th fret problem

It could just be a "wolf tone" on that particular instrument.
Sometimes and instrument has one particular frequency that gets squished for whatever reason.

Re: Adding side port to mandolin

Thank you for the input, Marty.
I appreciate your opinion, as I admire your instruments, and see your experiments with different types of sound holes, etc.

I am not going to start cutting holes...

Thanks for the past thread suggestions.

    Adding side port to mandolin

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone experimented with adding side ports to an existing mandolin.
My question is about how it effects the existing tone from the front the mandolin.

    I like the...

    Re: Girouard G5 Concert

Yeah, that is a pretty mandolin.
I need to try a Girouard.
They seem to be a reasonably priced, beautifully made mandolin.
I used to not like the pointy scroll thing, but it has grown on me.

Re: Best type of string for my mandolin

My Northfield has an Engelmann top, and some types of strings make it sound more compressed and less projecting.

Re: New Mandolin Day - Ellis

    I love Ellis mandolins.
They are just exactly what they should be.

Beautiful silking in the grain on the top.
    Is it Engelmann?

    Re: High frets on mandolin.

Unfortunately it comes down to the mandolin, and it usually costs quite a bit to get a mandolin that functions well up there.
Most of my mandolins are pretty useless above the 14th fret.
    BUT my...

I always remove the pick guard first thing.
If you have good right hand technique, you don't need one.
  24. Re: Odd Oscar Schmidt 12 string (four courses) mandolin

    That is a little different.
It is basically a 12 string guitar, up an octave.
That is 6 courses of two strings.
The one I posted is four courses of three strings

    Although, I guess you could...

    Bluegrass Jams in Lake Tahoe

    Hey all,

I’m in Tahoe for a week or so, and was wondering if anyone knew of any bluegrass jams happening in the area.
I know it is a long shot, but thought I would ask.
    I have my Northfield,...
