    Re: Did someone say PICKS?

A wise guru once said: "For every mandolin there exists a perfect pick."

And: "For every pick there exists a perfect mandolin."

And finally: "And never the twain shall meet."

    shazam! MAS...
  3. Re: Campanella two-point (How to make an accent on due?)

Well, I'll be darned and touché.
  4. Re: Campanella two-point (How to make an accent on due?)

That does work, but I believe the Due is named as the Italian word for two, as in two-pointer. Thus no accent.
  5. Re: Article: Amid Constant Change The Mandolin Store Flourishes

Some would say I am crazy (and I wouldn't argue), but last week a light bulb went off in my mind and I just decided I needed to drive down to Surprise AZ to visit TMS. Dennis and Brian were great and...

    Re: I fear

How old are you? If you are over 6, you'll never get clawhammer down right. But nobody will know.

And if you happen to drop a thumb, just bend over and pick it up. Always good for a laugh.
  8. Re: mando in $300 price range for Italian songs

I paid ~$300 for my Vega bowlback and it looks and sounds pretty good. It sounds good with O Solo Mio and Santa Lucia (my whole Italian repertoire). I see them on eBay from time to time for about the...

    Re: Internet Radio Stations?

Somebody mentioned Folk Alley, which comes from WKSU ( https://www.wksu.org/#stream/1 ). They also have my favorite classical stream ( https://www.wksu.org/#stream/2 ). (WKSU is public radio from...
  13. Re: What's the origin/lyrics of this song: All Around the Mountai

I heard it on The String Band Project, Elektra Records, EKS-7292, in the mid 1960's. It a compilation of various old timey string band musicians, this one done by Stu Jamieson's Boys. See...

Re: Would you sacrifice tone for playability?

Let's say I have $500 - $1.5k to spend on a mandolin. I would not buy one that sounds crummy. I would not buy one that has structural problems or design defects that render it impossible to play...

    Re: Interesting video

Wow. I understood almost every word. But the sentences were ... well ... intricate. Am I allowed to be fascinated even though I didn't really get much stashed away in usable form?
  16. Re: Can anyone tell me anything about this banjolin?

As a matter of fact, I am pretty sure the banjo mandolin in that thread is the same instrument as the one in this thread. Check the stains on the head. Good catch, Flutes.
  17. Re: Can anyone tell me anything about this banjolin?

Whoever made it sure didn't want anybody taking it apart on a whim. I don't think I have ever seen that many fasteners.

I am guessing it is English, but only on very weak evidence -- a) I haven't...

Evan, your link takes me to the PBS trailers on a bluegrass documentary produced by Kentucky Public Broadcasting, which I will surely watch next week. But Ken Burns' documentary on country music...

    Re: Brid Harper Jig Fingering

That is interesting. I usually cheat to avoid use of the pinkie. Never thought of using it when I didn't need to.

In any case, thanks for posting: I see that Tergal14 has a great collection of...

    Re: beside the mandolin.

Used to. But none of that la-dee-dah three finger stuff. Swore it off, though, and got a mandolin. Haven't looked back.

If it is anything like my quest to find a 'good' teacher for golf (some years ago), it may involve taking a few lessons and deciding you are not getting what you want out of that particular...

Congratulations to Eli and to you, too, Steve. That is a brilliant sounding mandolin!
  25. Re: Check out this mandolin...... Thoughts, comments, concerns

In answer to a question posed in another thread, I can now say that I have one fewer mandolins than I really really gotta have.
