Re: New Mandolin Day - Ellis

    Good gravy. That's beautiful. Congratulations!

They use a James tailpiece. I don't know about the arm rest.
  2. Re: Going out of the country...personal item/carry-on?

Yup. Same. Mine's been to Iceland, Scotland, Costa Rica, the Cayman Islands, and all over the US, among other places I've probably forgotten about.
  3. Re: Going out of the country...personal item/carry-on?

I've carried on a mandolin in a gig bag more times than I can count, but I think I'm done with that program. They won't fit under the seat, and it's too stressful to watch the other passengers...

    Re: Jams near Beaumont TX

Beaumont is really more like Louisiana culturally than it is Texas. I'm not surprised to hear that the picking scene is pretty thin. There are a number of regular jams in Houston, about 90 minutes...

Re: Like this site but for guitar....

The only one I regularly post at is the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum. The Collings Forum used to be ok as a niche forum for Collings afficinadoes, but it disappeared, came back about a year ago,...
  6. Re: Obscure Tony Rice tabs. No mando content.

Wow, thanks! What a great resource. It's been a long while since I've posted on Flatpick-L. I wonder if I've still got my hat. I still get the digest.

Edit: Cool to see "Streets of London" on...

Re: Red spruce versus Engleman (MT/MT2)

I would have and did. Sorry, but I moved it along about a year ago. I've been playing a Pava A style since then, which is terrific and a wonderful contrast with the new MT2-O.

Re: Just wanted to say thanks...

My post about the difference between Engleman and red spruce this morning was more than theoretical. I wound up ordering the sunburst MT2-0 that's been listed on the Music Emporium's website. I...

Re: Red spruce versus Engleman (MT/MT2)

Great point. This may be the source of my hesitation. I had a stock MT years ago which I loved and have always regretted selling. More recently I had an MF-O which I never really bonded with. It...

    Red spruce versus Engleman (MT/MT2)

I'm curious whether anyone has thoughts on the tonal differences of red spruce versus Engleman on the Collings MT/MT2 line, and more specifically with respect to an MT-O versus an MT2-O. Are the...

I'm about 99% sure I decided to buy a new mandolin today.

    Re: Natural talent vs practice

Yup. And sometimes, like last night, when it feels like I'm just beating my head against the wall, the best thing I can do is put it down. There's a point of diminishing returns where all I'm doing...

Re: Opinion on nickel vs. gold aesthetics

Speaking only for myself, I much prefer nickel. Obviously this is a purely subjective choice that has nothing to do with tone, but it's a strong enough preference for me that I probably wouldn't buy...

Nobody can afford that Ellis. We are Icarus, and it is the sun. You want that MFO gloss top at Down Home Guitars.

    Re: Natural talent vs practice

I don't know if I have any natural talent. What I do have is an abiding love for the sounds of acoustic guitars and mandolins that's been with me for as long as I can remember. That's allowed me to...
  17. Re: Mandolin players who bought or have played a Waterloo Mandoli

I've been looking to upgrade my own mandolin situation, and even the regular Collings tailpiece leaves something to be desired.

I figured it was just a blurry man strumming a bouzouki.

  19. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

Thanks. My information was very stale. I don't really miss Spotify, but I'm always in favor of their being more choices in the market. My gym plays a generic mix of classic rock that is...
  20. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

Worth every penny (and it's only about 33 cents a day for the premium service). Between Spotify and podcasts, I haven't had to listen to a radio commercial, NPR pledge drive, or pay a Siruius...

Re: Visit to Carter Vintage Guitars

I traded a couple of emails with one of the well-known shops about them, and the owner spoke really highly about them. Then I mentioned I own a Pono octave, and he said that to his ears the Pono (at...
  22. Re: Sirius Radio Replaced Bluegrass station 62 with 24/7 Dolly Pa

Don't they charge an extra $5 or something per month for online access? Bluegrass Junction was one of the few draws that ever tempted to come back to Sirius, even if it was somewhat too "Nashville"...
