    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

Haha, yes those angles will make your brain hurt - the way you did yours was pretty much what I did, which is to say a small ebony fillet under the bass side. Certainly not my idea, I think it came...

    Re: Warps in bent sides

Been there done that - yours doesn't look too bad to be honest, some struts glued to the sides would indeed help a lot (and improve long term stability too).

    Re: Fan-fret mandocello build

Yes I designed and made the tailpiece - it's just a bent piece of bass sheet with curly maple over. The pins aren't required to hold the strings in, as the underling brass has a keyhole shaped slot...

    Re: Action vs clarity

I wasn't very clear here - if the strings don't touch the higher frets at all then there can be no loss, period. Raising the action can make no difference.

But there is a point just before you...

    Re: Action vs clarity

You can lose clarity when the action drops too low and the strings are not exactly buzzing, but just losing energy to the frets. Can also occur if either the saddle or nut slots are not correctly...
  8. Re: How to adjust the bridge on a fanned fret 10 string mandolin?

+1, certainly for my 10 string cittern you just don't notice the fan at all.

I have to say though, they can be a pain to set up - not least because the strings in each pair are different lengths...

    Re: Bowlbacks of Note

I think Suzuki have been building fairly similar looking mandolins for a very long time. None of them are valuable, some of them do sound perfectly reasonable, but some of the older ones have rather...
  11. Re: Bowl-back mandolin VS (what i'm called) "ukulele mandolin"

Sorry, none on the horizon at present.

I have built a couple of mandolinettos and rather liked the sound actually, and have another screwed together on an outside frame as an experiment, but...

Re: The end of my playing days.

Another picker here who will sadly miss Ivan - one of the small number of Brits around here I'd hoped to bump into in person one day, and now it's not to be.

    Definitely not forgotten.

Re: What are these bridges called?

The closest historical comparison to both of these are the DeMeglio style bridges:

    180658

In all 3 designs the "bit behind the bridge saddle" compensates for a lack of downforce on the bridge...

Re: Alternatives to celluloid binding in Europe

Good point: most of us I suspect keep offcuts from sides to use as binding... maple, rosewood, etc.

Re: Alternatives to celluloid binding in Europe

Check out https://www.rothkoandfrost.com/ for lots of binding materials (their faux-tortoishell is particularly nice IMO), but as you're in Spain, I'm sure https://maderasbarber.com will have a...

    Re: Zero Glide Nut System

That's not quite true: if you read the details: https://goldtonemusicgroup.com/zeroglide/ you have a choice of 4 heights to choose from for your zero fret. So you have to pick the one that's just...

Re: A question about guitar bridge pins

How strange, I haven't detected any change in sound from changing bridge pins (other than the brass ones - but that's just dumping a ton of weight on the guitar top).

I do like both bone and...

    Re: Zero Glide Nut System

    Why?

I'm on record about these before - I'm a big fan of a zero fret and use one on all my new builds - these devices though combine all the worst features of a regular nut and a zero fret and...

Re: How would you do this?

I would remove the bushings, then use a cotton bud to run some glue around the insides of the hole. Let the glue dry hard and then check the fit, repeat as required. Something like titebond would...

Re: cites rules on older instruments

That's sort of true: but I believe there is a restriction on a single item for personal possessions, so a single guitar is fine, but if you have a second, or some other item with rosewood in it...

Black Tar Roses - "Ned Kelly"

I recently had the privilege of adding a bit of incidental mandolin on the live promo version of the Black Tar Roses début single "Ned Kelly".

That used to be the case, but currently ALL rosewood species are listed as of Jan 2017.

Officially you would need proof that the instrument pre-dates the ban, plus special shipping via a...
