    Re: Naming your Mandolin

The Buckeye F5 is, err, Buckey, while my Flatiron mandola remains unnamed for some reason. Our cars are Rocky (the color or rocks) and Irene (purchased during Hurricane Irene).

    Re: Mule skinner Mandolin info?

Yup, I too entered the raffle for the mandolin at the Green Mountain Bluegrass and Roots festival. And DIDN'T win. Outrageous. I'd love to have heard the instrument more- the other models all sounded...

Re: Original cost of a Lloyd Loar F5

According to www.usinflationcalculator.com that $250 back in 1923 is equivalent to $3,744.78 in today's money. Not as much as I would have thought. What's a Gibson MM going for these days? Hmmmm.
  5. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

They should as those mandolins are arguably better (in my opinion) than the majority of Gibsons in circulation.

    Re: Loar-period A-Jrs.

Looks great! Enjoy picking your little piece of history.
  7. Re: Gibson threatening the mandolin and guitar luthier community

Don't forget "humbucker!" Maybe I should patent "pick" or "strings" before Gibson grabs it...

    Re: Substitutes for ebony?

This is what Fender now uses on a lot of it's instruments. Not sure why they can't find something domestically sourced since the American South has the greatest diversity of non-tropical hardwoods in...

    Re: Brought home a Buckeye!

You'll love it! They're great mandolins, so great that I can't imagine trading mine in for most anything, in fact my M.A.S. is fortunately D.O.A. John Reischman who knows a good mandolin (!) had...

Re: Would appreciate some opinions please.

Buckeye! Def. worth checking out and certainly comparable with the Duff - Ellis - Pava - etc. group.

My guess? Just some bad reporting by a well meaning nonmusician.

Re: My mandolin got eaten by a Stratocaster.

Funny, I'm 47 and for no good reason at all I recently bought a Fender MIM Mustang equipped with P-90s. Cheap but FUN guitar that oh so wants to play CCR AND Nirvana! My amp is little tube Bugera V5...

Re: Any Love for a Vintage Gibson F-12?

In short, most F12s just aren't all that great. Lucky for you that the headstock says Gibson and not Gilson.

    Re: Washburn Mandolins

The tops of the two Washburns I owned ended up sinking. That was the early 2000s, things may be different now but I wouldn't get anywhere near one unless it's used and stable.

Re: Column: Where is Bluegrass Headed?

Thank goodness Pink Floyd didn't spend too much time learning the Little Richard and Chuck Berry repertoire.

    Re: MAS in remission

Regarding the plural issue that mentioned above, it is correct to say "octopuses", not octopi as is "fishes." But here's a caveat: The -es specifically refers to species. Think if you saw four fish...

    Re: Relatively expensive mandolins

Yeah, this is a touchy issue for a lot of us who want a better instrument and swim in the midst of Gibson, Ellis, Collings, Gil, etc. owners. And the Loar owners! Another breed entirely. As many have...

Re: Jerry Douglas Band at Grey Fox

Hi. I'm really hesitant to engage in this conversation which seems primed to ruffle feathers. I'll do my best to tread lightly.
