Re: Am I being to Critical on New Mandolin

Bearclaw is common and is of no structural nor is it a sound issue. It is especially common in European Spruce so it is normal, it is not a fault, don't worry about it. It shows the top is actually...

Re: Am I being to Critical on New Mandolin

I would submit that there’s something significant missing in your assessment process.

How does it play? How does it feel and sound? That is what matters.

If you haven’t learned to play yet,...

Re: Dreaming of a Great A5 under $6000

    Re: New flat top mandolin

I've been slow to jump in here in praise of Peter's beautiful work because I wanted to get a short video ready first.

I'm the happy owner of Peter's "classical flattop" #248 (pictures and samples...
  6. Re: Learn to play multiple instruments at once?

If you want a paying gig, learn Bass! A good bass player (pre-quarantine) could always find a job, often in multiple bands. If you are a casual player who wants to accompany themselves or friends,...
  7. Re: Learn to play multiple instruments at once?

Approach them as different instruments. Because they are. I wouldn’t learn more than two at a time - get each one under your fingers. Ukulele is guitar from the fifth fret so once you’ve got guitar...
  8. Land's End. Tim O'Brien cover with free notation

Hey yall! This Tim O'Brien tune is one of my favorites. In the process of working on this one, I notated out the standard dots for it. On "Hard Year Blues" Tim plays the B and C parts up an octave...
  9. Re: Are All Lloyd Loars Dropping In Price?

You would come out a very confused camper for sure.

It has been discussed and I agree that there is a noticable difference in the perception of sound of a LL when you are the audience as opposed...

    Cole mandolins

I contacted Ron Cole back in 2000 about building me an F-5. He used bubble big leaf maple for the 2 piece back. I wanted a slightly wider neck than standard. He made a jig and custom built the...

    Re: Which mandolin to buy

The 504 is a nicer instrument, IMO, than the KM-150, unless you can envision yourself diving into bluegrass, in which case the 150 is a better tool for that job. Kentucky makes some higher tier...

    Re: Which mandolin to buy

Of those two imports, with mandolins in the same price range, I'd prefer a Kentucky. On another personal level, I've never liked the sound from an oval hole mandolin. I have always preferred F-hole...

Re: Are All Lloyd Loars Dropping In Price?

Very little chance of that IMO. And really what reason is there to expect it? Look at old violins.

Besides even now MANY people do choose to buy great mandolins for less money but some people...

Ordered the D'Addario Thile pick from Sweetwater a couple weeks back. Still waiting.

Anybody know the availability status of these.

Waiting to hear back from Sweetwater.

    Re: Alternate tunings?

errhhh... supposing you mean CGDA, capo the 5th fret and you're there. Winding up a 4th without a capo would require lighter strings.

    Re: New Frets!

Good to hear - my '21 A2 needs a refret and I was wondering if SS fretwire came in that teeny size.

I was also wondering if I should stick to that size or go with "normal" size SS frets. I don't...

That is an exceptionally beautiful instrument. The 13 inch scale appeals to me, too. My aging hands are finding shorter scale lengths much more comfortable. Great job, Graham. Thanks for sharing...

I know your Washburn does not sound like a Collings, but I must say that you make amazingly good sound emerge from it. Still, I know what you mean.
