Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
Any one have any experience with these?
Search gives me no hits so I'm guessing not many do.

I never knew I needed one until right now.

Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
@ one point Gibson made a Mandolin sized 6 string guitar , never touched one in person..
There are fractional sized guitars, that are guitar shaped too 2-4, 3-4 etc.. like in violins ..

Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
Out of the half-dozen or so of these type of instruments (not made by Goldtone) that have come in to our shop I have yet to see one that was playable in any sort of appreciable manner. They were poorly made and to achieve a good setup would have taken a heroic investment exceeding economic reason. Not that it can't be done. I have heard good things about Goldtone. I'm new to mandolins (just the last two years) and I have judged these from the perspective of a guitar maker and guitar player. For the style of playing in the video, someone may find one of these to be very enjoyable. I suspect that anyone looking to play them as just a tiny guitar is going to be disappointed. Playing a mandolin like a guitar misses the point as there is so much more to it that a mandolin excels with. Only time will tell if these are worth anything. I'd love to hear some reviews.

Thanks.
I'll keep that in mind.
The jury is still out for me, but the sound intrigues me. So maybe early January I'll give it a try.

The guy in the demo did a nice job with Whiskey Before Breakfast!

Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
I know Daniel Lanois used one to add scratchy rhytm tracks to either (or both) U2's Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree.

Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
I played one of the 6 string versions at my local Sam Ash and, despite some of the comments so far, I actually found it enjoyable and easy to play. Fingers get crammed together for four finger chords at the nut due to the smaller scale but this can be remedied with some minor change in technique and or chord derangement. Ultimately it's just an octave guitar in a mandola body and would probably sound nice as a backing track on recordings. These are surprisingly inexpensive and I almost brought one home for the fun of it as it's nice to have an almost mandolin sized instrument for guitar style vocal accompaniment but instead made a mental note to someday look for a nice octave guitar for the same purpose. In the mean time, mandolin currently serves me well in that way.

Thanks for the links, but I'm not following what this has to do with Gold Tone Mando-Guitar.
What are they playing? Looks like a great instrument.

Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
The Goldtone is not a mandolin or electric.Someone came out with a copy of the Vox years ago.Maybe they will be made again by Eastwood?

Watched the Whole Buddy Miller video, after 37 minutes he gets to the 12 string mando guitar playing a Hammertone.Looks like Phantom still makes one and Eastwood with the Tele style body.I’m staying with electric mandolin.

Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
If anyone likes the idea of a mini electric 12-string here's an alternative. I took a mini strat, shortened the neck by the first three frets, replaced the fretboard and added three more tuners to make it a nine string. You get the chime of a 12-string with half the effort to play it. It has both piezo through a fishman preamp and the original mag pickups. Its not actually a difficult build and its kinda cute. I call it a stratopixie.

How did you change the fretboard?

Re: Goldtone Long Scale Mando-Guitar
Yanked the frets and used my joiner. Very tidy. A nice large block plane could do the same.

Has nothing to do with the Goldtone, I was following where the topic had veered off to the Vox/Phantom/Hammertone short scale 12-string

I knew this was still referring to the Vox style instrument.
