Hi, I´m newbie in this forum. I´ve just started to play Mandolin seriously. I bought my first mandolin about year ago, but I haven´t have time to practise it that much. Now I have start to play mandolin more often. I like mostly oldtime bluesy/jazzy stuff and my favourite mandolin player is Dave Apollon. Here´s my version of Mississippi Mud Steppers tune Jackson Stomp that I found from great compilation called Before The Blues ( Yazoo ).

Great! I'm just getting into some Blues, Rags, etc. via Rich Del Grosso's course. Bluegrass is great but I like all kinds of Roots music! Good job, man!

Good going! I forgot about this song. Used to do it in my old band way back nearly thirty years ago - guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. Liked Joe Turner Blues too, though could hardly hear vocals. I've never seen a steel ukulele before - very cool.

I have been trying to get the lick Charlie does over the I chord involving the I and 7 notes played at the same time, only syncopated and with one brushy pick stroke. You play it at around 2:30 on your version. Man he had a touch. He is able to get those two notes to ring beginning at staggered times yet they totally ring out together. Along the same line, the way he scrapes the I chord, ending on the I note. It sounds like he starts on the 5 note on the g string, the 3 on the d string, and the 1 on the A string. He plays these three notes in one down pick stroke, pushing through the chord. Man, I love his sound. This syncopated down stroke a "rake" is what I am really trying to learn from this tune. Cool stuff!

I had to sacrifice that to get myself money to buy this new lovely Taropatch made by Finnish luthier Juha Lottonen ( He also makes Mandolins: www.lottonen.com ). Anyway ukes by National are great instruments!!!!

They are absolutely fantastic! I´m happy that there is some people who keep this kinda music alive.. And yes Charlie McCoy was a very hot player: great stuff to listen and learn...

I have only heard/played Jackson Stomp as an instrumental. Never heard words for it.
The song to the "Jackson Stomp" tune is called "The Lonesome Train That Took My Baby Away." Here's Charlie McCoy (mandolin) and Bo Carter. I don't know who is singing. I can pick up most of the lyrics, though I hear with a Canadian accent -- but then I have listened to a lot of blues. You might find lyrics on the net under the song title though. If the links don't work search You Tube for "Charlie McCoy/The Lonesome Train That Took My Baby Away".
