Recommend a good music stand
I've done a search and didn't have much success. I'm looking for a good music stand (not instrument stand). I have a cheap fold up stand that is literally on it's last leg. I'm looking for something a little nicer. I've seen some nice wooden ones in the past, but I don't know who makes them or how much they go for. There's not much here locally, so any recommendations or advice would be welcomed. Pictures would be an added bonus!
Thanks
John

Among the best would be a Manhasset. All the high school bands use them because they are extremely durable. Very adjustable, not just the height but also the angle of the desk. I have two that I bring to gigs. Not fancy looking or even very pretty, but it will last for ever and always works.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
I am very pleased with my very heavy duty Hercules music stand. It has the wind holes and it folds easily for travel.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
I have a QuikLoc music stand that I picked up, new, from a pawn shop, & I really like it. Its sturdy, pretty adjustable, & the base folds up nicely to all go in a provided bag.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
I'm happy with my Pro Tec Touring Stand that replaced my beat-up cheapo that wouldn't fold up anymore. The Pro Tec is sturdy, but light and folds up small. I think it was about $30.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
I really like my Ruka ultralight stand. It's very stable, folds up small, and comes with a nice carrying pouch with handle. I bought a second one for my wife. Good stuff.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
I own and like the RAT Jazz Stand the best for those occasions I need one. They are a UK company but have a US and Canada sales office... details on their website.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
How portable does it need to be? Manhasset is great (we have two) but I'd hate to take it to gigs or sessions.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
there are 'stand outs' for the manhassett desk they spread out to a 4 sheet width.
and slide in to be no wider.. than the standard width ..
+ empty deck is a good acoustic reflector.. being solid metal

They are a bit of a pain, but wow, they are stable in the wind, never top heavy even with a big tunebook on them, and when you carry them into the gig folks offer to help.
Re: Recommend a good music stand
there is a folding base model .. just that an aluminum desk wont be able to hold down sheets with a magnet
unless you have another one on the back side and they're strong enough to grab each other ..
Re: Recommend a good music stand
Manhaset voyager is folding, comes in a bag, easy set up, stable and not too expensive ++
Re: Recommend a good music stand
Thanks everyone for your recommendations. The Manhasset stands do look durable. It will be mainly for home use.
I found a couple of sites that sell wooden stands that are very nice, but also fairly pricy.
Take a Stand http://www.takeastandinc.com/SM_Music_Stand.html
Mister Standman http://www.misterstandman.com/thestnds.htm
For those prices, I could probably build one myself.
Does anyone have any experience with wooden stands? They really do look like functional art.
Thanks again
John
Re: Recommend a good music stand
I've used wooden stands and they're very nice, but in my experience they're impractical for any use other than home use for most musicians who don't have a road crew to lug around heavy cases. And moving a wooden stand without having it protected is just begging for disaster in my opinion.

If it's mainly for home and you like the look of wood, I'd say go for that. I've played from some beautiful and very functional ones. There are some nice ones in kit form which would save you money. Google it.

Don't know if you've decided, but I like my Manhasset stand a lot.

It has a cool little shelf at the bottom that I use to hold picks, capos, tuners, etc. I like the accessory light, too. I have taken it to a couple coffee shop gigs I did a long time ago & it worked well, just not super portable.

If I had the free cash I would have this. They also make a double stand.
