Faraway Grandchild
Apologies to Dagger, this is to welcome our new grandchild, a happy event amid the general gloom.
She's just across town, but given current isolation requirements it will be a long time before we can do any more than see her through the window, so this bittersweet tune felt appropriate.

Re: Faraway Grandchild
You’re breaking my heart, Bren! Just beautiful! Is that tune available on paper?
I haven’t seen my two grandsons in two weeks, except on FaceTime. They are 3 and 1, probably the most fun ages....

Re: Faraway Grandchild
A lovely sentiment, Bren, and congratulations on your new grandchild. Mine are 2 and 4, and across in East Calder (not far from me in Argyll but might as well be across the ocean just now). We keep in touch via Whatsapp video chats and lots of pictures, and we are all in the same boat wherever we are. Music has been one of the great positives during this time and the fact that we can share our tunes this way is just so great. I posted a collaborative tune yesterday over on the SAW group, the fiddle melody recorded in Dunblane then emailed to me to add guitar then I added pictures to create a wee video. Enjoyable activity.

Re: Faraway Grandchild
Thanks John and Mike.
The tune is on Dagger's excellent CD "The Frozen River" and the dots are in Ceol na Fidhle vol 4 and probably on The Session

Re: Faraway Grandchild
Hi guys,
I'm taking a moment from lambing and spotted this. Thanks for putting it up Bren.
This may help, if you're looking for the dots. I haven't time just now to put them up for you.

(they seem to describe it as a reel, which it definitely isn't)

Re: Faraway Grandchild
My only contact with a beloved little baby, now about 5 weeks old was on Skype. She's beautiful and I hope to hold her someday.

Re: Faraway Grandchild
I wrote the tune for my wife's parents shortly after the birth of our oldest child Colin, who is now 32.
My wife is American, and her family are based in Connecticut.

Re: Faraway Grandchild
Here is a version of The Faraway Grandchild. There is quite a lot of wildlife activity going on, between bees and pigeons flying around.

Re: Faraway Grandchild
Lovely delivery of your tune here, Dagger. There is a wee phrase in there that reminds me slightly of Mary Morrison. Hope the drifting smoke is just the barbecue preparing the outdoor repast!

Re: Faraway Grandchild
My version of Dagger's beautiful tune, played on my 20 A model.

Re: Faraway Grandchild
Love the tune Dagger. I cannot fathom what you all are going through that can’t hug or see your grandchild/children. See my 4 Grandblessings almost every day. Our daughter works in a hospital, husband’s an electrician. So when schools were closed the wife an I took care of them while they did their distant learning. Would’ve just died if we could not of been able to hug and just breathe them in. Having a hard time letting the oldest get married toomario. I have the honor of walking her down the aisle. Not sure if I can hand her over to that intruder.:))

Re: Faraway Grandchild
We have been able to see and hold our granddaughter since late June.
It has been a great boost for us and especially my wife who has been going through cancer treatment.

Thinking of you. All the best Dagger

Re: Faraway Grandchild
Lovely tune, Dagger. And nice playing by all, but Dagger wins the prize for remaining unfazed in the face of an aerial assault.

Re: Faraway Grandchild
I must learn this lovely song. My daughter married a Navy man. He's a great match for her and I'm delighted to watch them grow in their marriage year by year, but they have this crazy notion that they should take OUR grandchildren with them when the US government sends them off to some far-flung place. They're stationed in Washington, now, near Seattle--a mere 1,500 miles away. Before that, it was Charleston, SC. Before that, Guam. Before that, Pearl Harbor, HI. Before that, San Diego, which is home to all of us.
So yes, we have some experience with the faraway grandchild. Dagger, thank you for writing it.
Bren, I'm praying for your wife--and for you. God bless you both.
