Just now & then I see a guitar with an acrylic body (usually transparent). I've trawled all the way thru the e bay mando thread, but never have I spotted a manifestation of such a beast in mando form!. I appreciate that this may be because its the silliest suggestion since un-sliced bread, but has it ever been tried, & if not, could this not at least be a worthy experiment?

As I recall, cutting Acrylic sheet is a lot different than wood.
because the melting of the material happens if you cut too fast,
and the tools are not sharp enough,
with CNC&CAM feed rate can be programmed , motor speed slowed down, the tools changed regularly , the chips cleaned out .

I once ranted to an experienced guitar playing friend of mine about how hideous I thought the Lucite guitars were, and he said they sustain for days. If that's the case, seems like it would be a worthy experiment.

I've seen one made of Formica, but that's as close as it gets.
-
Martin, did you get to play it? Has anyone out there played any of the Lucite instruments?
-
The Formica mandolin is the infamous creation of one C.H.T. Beswick, a countryman of yours if I'm not mistaken. You can find it at emando.com. No, I haven't played it.

Ha Ha Ha, well we Brits have a sense of humor that the rest of you don't always connect with! If I ever make it into your hall of, er, fame with a mandolin of my own making, or at least specification, I'll try to create something with a little more commercial appeal. Will now research all the other builders on your excellent site!http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/...ns/biggrin.gif
