Found a great luthier in the Bay Area
Just wanted to sing the praises of Robert Sherman's repair work.
If you are in the bay area, and you are looking for a luthier for mandolin work, or any instrument really, he is awesome.
He is located in Napa, but it is a beautiful drive up there, and he is a really cool guy.
He does mando work for Mike Marshall, so you know he must be great.
I brought in my Northfield for fretwork and a setup.
I thought it played great before, but now it is unbelievable.
He dialed it in to perfection.
Let him work on your instrument.
You will not be disappointed.

Good to know. There's some good luthier/techs in SF, especially south of Market but they're in kinda sketchy neighborhoods
(Just to name names: Gary Brawer that everybody knows, SF guitarworks, Real Guitars (at least they used to have good techs there when i lived there)

SF Guitarworks still has good techs - they do all the work on my mandolin/guitar.

Though he is primarily known for his work in Kenny Hill’s guitar shop and as an electric bass builder, San Mateo peninsula luthier Ben Lamden has done excellent work for me. He replaced tailpieces on both of my instruments and good setup on one.
Re: Found a great luthier in the Bay Area
I second the thumbs up on Robert Sherman in Napa. Found his name here on the Cafe. Recently had him do some work on my kit-built Siminoff F5. Since building it several years ago, my old hands have become too shaky to try any repairs.
I had Robert:
- Replace narrow frets with EVO 80X43
- Replace nut for better string spacing
- Put slight radius on fretboard (at his suggestion)
- Do a setup
Everything came out great and he was very easy to work with.
I'm a long way from Napa, but my daughter lives in Napa. Dropped it off in late Oct and picked it up when back in Napa for Turkey Day. No shipping needed. :)
