Winter's Tale 5 - free sheet music for mandolin trios
Dear Mandolin Friends,
Here is my fifth folio of free mandolin trio arrangements for winter. I included 6 carols this year, all of them beautiful and most not well-known. All but two are new arrangements I have not previously published. If you see any errors, please let me know.
The collection is a little smaller than usual because I spent a lot of time putting out a new book, Evelyn’s Mandolin Trio Book, Vol 3, which is now available from Amazon. What about that cover (designed by my daughter Anna Castiglioni)? It has the headstock of a Pava mandolin with a bluebonnet inlay, courtesy of Pava Knezevic, Tom Ellis, and Cathy Pelosi. Texas was a lot in my thoughts when I put together this book. BLuebonnets are our sate flower. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1729727336
If you would like to find the previous 4 Winter’s Tale collections, there are links in this forum. I tried to provide them but did not succeed.
Best wishes for a happy, healthful holiday season that brings you time with friends and family, joy, and contentment.
Evelyn

Dear Mandolin friends,
Gary, thank you very much for posting the links to the earlier books.
I understand that some computers can't access the music this way, so I have put all 5 books in a Dropbox link. The Dropbox also has Winter's Tale 2 in several traspositions (cello, viola, Bb clarinet) and Winter's Tale 1 melodies in mandolin and guitar tab.
Here is the link:

Best regards,

Thank you for your generosity! My friends and I have your 2015 and 2017 books, and are ready to purchase the 2018 as soon as they are back in stock. Our little trio plays exclusively from your books -- the arrangements are lovely.

Re: Winter's Tale 5 - free sheet music for mandolin trios
Many thanks, Evelyn -- I really enjoyed Winter's Tale 5. Lot's of great tunes! I've been tied up with other things, but have now finally got around to recording and uploading a few of these (plus a bonus one from your 2018 book). As usual, these are home recordings with me playing all tracks. However, we have also tried these with our mandolin group, and your original hornpipe The Humours Of Sinbad in particular was very popular with everybody -- great catchy tune!
The Humours Of Sinbad:
The Traveller Benighted In Snow:
On A Cold Winter's Day:
Es wird scho glei dumpa:
I Wish My Love Were In A Mire:
All tunes played on:
Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin
1921 Gibson Ajr mandolin (Ceccherini bowlback on "Es wird scho glei dumpa")
Vintage Viaten tenor guitar
Suzuki MC-815 mandocello
Thanks again, Evelyn!

Thanks, Evelyn! I've been very busy and hadn't had a chance to visit mandolin cafe for a while and was very happy to see your 5th book of Winter's Tale. Another great collection! Your arrangements are excellent! Thank you for this wonderful gift!

Re: Winter's Tale 5 - free sheet music for mandolin trios
Thanks so much, Evelyn!!! I've just gotten my copy of book I and I LOVE it! My husband and I play them on recorders (badly!) and pennywhistle/fiddle/mandolin and then I use some of them with students. Book 3 is on its way.
These are FANTASTIC!

Here is another of my recordings from the Winter's Tale 5 collection: this is "Craig Ghuanach", better know as the tune to the "Mingulay Boat Song".
I take the melody on mandocello the second time around.
Mid-Missouri M-0W mandolin
1921 Gibson Ajr mandolin
Vintage Viaten tenor guitar
Suzuki MC-815 mandocello

I have just recorded a video of Astrid's Waltz from Winter's Tale 5 for my granddaughter Astrid Leia:

As usual I am using my looper to play the trio (or as it includes also the guitar part quartet) together with myself.
Thanks for the arrangements!
It sounds really beautiful!

Re: Winter's Tale 5 - free sheet music for mandolin trios
Thank you as always Martin and Michael for the recordings; quality of these keeps getting better and better: these were particularly crystal clear and musical.
And THANK YOU Evelyn for providing not just very nice music, but arrangements in 3 clefs so I can play my much-neglected mandocello along with my mandola friend and just about any fine mandolin player.

Impressive Michael, I'll have to give that a go. I have a looper which I have used once, so I don't think I'll be posting on here any time soon ;)

Re: Winter's Tale 5 - free sheet music for mandolin trios
Here's another tune - The Female Saylor - from Winter's Tale 1
It's a nice jig composed by Marin Marais long time ago.
I have recorded a complete set with classical guitar as a background to my looper, then played the mandolin for the video.

Re: Winter's Tale 5 - free sheet music for mandolin trios
I usually wait until December 1 to bust out Winter's Tale but I decided to get started early this year. Played through tunes from all five books this afternoon and thought I would bump this thread for any new members who have not downloaded these amazing collections. They are in notation, not tab, but they contain lots of tunes that are good for people just learning to read music. When I started playing tunes in these books a few years ago I was a pretty slow reader, but every year I come back to the books there are more pieces I can play, sight reading new tunes at a faster tempo every year.
Thanks harper!

You perform these arrangements fantastically, and it must be stressed that Evelyn's arrangements in her books are excellent! :mandosmiley:

I got Winter's Tale vols. 1-5 out even earlier than usual this year (early November) and meant to bump this thread again to let people, especially new cafe members, know about these wonderful collections, but for various I have not been spending as much time on the cafe as I used to. Anyhow, check out all five volumes, there is something for everyone there. Enjoy!

It's that time again! Time to bust out the five volumes of Winter's Tale and start playing through this fabulous collection of tunes. If you are a beginner, new to mandolin and trying to learn to read music, there are lots of familiar tunes in friendly keys for you. Check out the links in posts #2 and #3 in this thread. Enjoy!

Franc Homer, if you have made recordings of those pieces, it would be interesting if you shared them here so we can have the pleasure of listening to them...:mandosmiley:

Re: Winter's Tale 5 - free sheet music for mandolin trios
I was looking for notation for Carol of the Bells for mandolin - hoping to rope our son in on this, but didn't come across this in time. Since the wife and I are laid up with the sniffles (a gift from a Thanksgiving guest, it seems) I squandered a day playing around with multi-tracking the parts (used the 3 "voice" version).

p.s. this is from winters tale 5 according to the printout I have.
