I have a set of (far-eastern/cross-headed) Rotomatics a couple of which feel a bit patchy and are not as smooth as they could be. I suspect the "lubricated for life" grease has dried out and I'd like to replace it.
Before I get into some serious stripping down (they're on my main guitar), does anyone know how to get at the worms? Preferably without removing the tuners.

Just my opinion but it sounds like more trouble than it's worth, even if it is possible. It should be very easy to find drop in replacements.
Probably but they're £79 a set in the UK and the ones I'm having trouble with are at least 20 years younger than the US made ones I have on another guitar which are working perfectly.
I agree with Mutidon. I have taken the bass guitar version apart and they will come apart but getting them back together was no fun. With new sets running under $50 and it being under an hour job, I would replace them.
It doesn't hurt to try. If you remove the screw that holds the button on, you can pull the button off, then you can push the shaft back out the other side of the tuner, it is threaded to mesh with a gear so you may have to wiggle it one way or the other to remove it. There is a tiny washer and spring right under the button you should be aware of. Don't lose those. You probably won't be able to get much of the old grease out, due to the confines, but you should be able to pack it with fresh grease and reassemble. I would use the heaviest grease I could find. Hi Paul, welcome to the cafe. They're the chrome ones. Thanks for the offer but there's not that much wrong with the ones I have. I can cope with them but they could clearly be better.
They may be under $50 in the US but I'm in the UK! If I can't get them better, I'll probably put up with them until I find a new set and give these a going over so I'll have some spares.
