Small diameter round braided strap source
I have been thinking of getting a new strap and saw this today(pic below) I did some searching and never did find it. Anyone have a link or a site that has this? I believe it to be a small diameter, round braided with leather on the tail with multiple holes for adjustment and then of course the leather loop for around the scroll. Thanks.

Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
Two different sources where I got mine. First time I bought one from Carmel Music. The second one came from Tony Williamson's Mandolin Central. Both are braided from kangaroo hide which apparently is very tough and durable. Mine certainly are. And both sources import them from different makers in Australia. NFI. I really like mine. You have to make your own holes on the butt end of the straps.

John check out “Little Satchel.” Jo is on Facebook and Etsy. She is located in Australia and she offers up a high quality hand made braided roo strap. Lp

You might check out Lakota Leathers. The website is lakotaleathers.com.
Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
I would say that one is more than likely a Kangaroo braid because you can get it quite thin and strong. Kangaroo is going to be significantly more expensive too.
I make cow, elk, or bison/buffalo straps (listed in the classifieds) but they are going to be a bit thicker/wider than that. I had a bit of Elk skin that came out very thin but was very strong and was able to make a few but those sold quick. I have thought about getting some Roo but it is not as readily available in the US.
For Kangaroo, check with the suggested suppliers and good luck!

John I believe Little Satchel is the one I bought from Mandolin Central.
Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
The round braid like a leather rope can be found in bulk.. on a roll, at leather shops..
but You want to just buy a ready to use one, a strap, with the finished ends, I suppose..
Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
As mandroid says there are many places to buy various amounts and varieties and sizes of round braided leather that could easily be turned into a nice strap by simply attaching a small piece (or loop) of leather on each end.
Here is one. Google search finds many more. NFI.
Here's some kangaroo round cord. (Not braided) Still NFI
All kinds of ways to make some nice straps!:)

Jo Brooks generally replies to emails or fb messenger within 12 to 24 hrs. Literally world class customer service. Mandolin Central and Carter would definitely be worth checking their inventory. Lp

Jo makes beautiful straps. We corresponded and she made me one exactly to fit my Ellis A. For those wondering, they're smoother and smaller diameter than the cowhide type made by Lakota et al. A much better match for a small light instrument like a mandolin

Just to clarify, the Lakota straps are either bison or elk hide, not cowhide.
Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
I am using several Little Satchel’s straps for my F styles and A styles.
Kangaroo leather is long lasting than cowhide.
I have placed orders via FB messenger every time.

Not withstanding the Lakota Leathers business model, they're still rougher, bigger & bulkier than the kangaroo hide straps we prefer.
Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
Randy Hogan makes a small round braided strap. Funny your talking about this because I sold my RH braided strap several years ago and I was fixing to contact him pretty soon to have one made. Just google Randy Hogan mandolin straps and you'll get alot of information. He is also no FB. ~o)
Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
I've bought at least 4 Randy Hogan straps (different styles) over the past decade or so. High quality and my favorite. He makes them as round-wound, flat-wound, or a mixture of the two. Can braid with 4 strips or six strips.

Looks like Randy Hogan isn’t an option, at least not according to this page. He said he was seeking treatment for arthritis and hoped to return.

Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
I'm pretty sure the Kangaroo strap shown in Doug Brock's post above is labeled a "Hines". Australian. Carmel had/has them. I recently saw Carter Vintage list the Little Satchel straps for sale - very similar to the Hines strap and I believe also made in Australia. I've got several Hines and they are quite nice and pretty thin compared to most other braided straps.

Re: Small diameter round braided strap source
I haven't made any for a while, but I used to make exactly what the OP is talking about, using 4mm leather strips braided into a four-part round braid learned from a youtube clip. I gave some of them to professional mandolinist friends who have used them for gigging, and who claim to like them a lot.
