Hi, Everyone:
Anyone have a good resource for East Tennessee Blues. I've been meaning to learn it for a while and think it's finally time. Any and all resources considered! :-)

Hi, Everyone:
Anyone have a good resource for East Tennessee Blues. I've been meaning to learn it for a while and think it's finally time. Any and all resources considered! :-)
Let this be your guide.
that's a good tempo right there, nice clean notes...may be one of the first tunes I worked on when I got my mandolin but then I had listened to Doc play it for years
I've always been a fan of Steffey's version

Also, this is the one I was staying away from, lol:

This has always been my favorite version. These old guys called it the Tennessee Rag. (Starts at 2:48)

That’s a really cool album but takes a bit to find it. Those boys and a couple of tracks with George Barnes.
Kevin, here’s a link to video from several years ago. I don’t play with a group anymore or get to pick as much as I would like. The fiddle player is Daniel Greeson and now plays with the group Sideline.

Thanks for the vids, everyone. Dig the pickin’ too, Skip. Your variations on the version I learned are helpful and give me some new ears for it. Slick fiddler there too. :-)
I am working primarily with the mando lessons version for now, to get up and running with the melody, but will be looking to get more in on what others are doing too. It’s refreshing to learn this tune because most fiddle tunes I know I learned from Steve Kauffman’s Bluegrass Workout. It was very helpful at the time, but doesn’t go too deep on the tunes. I still use it for keeping my hands in shape though. Learning from new and multiple sources is invigorating.

Adam plays it beautifully here.
And post #7 is a diff tune.
That Steffy version is great. The first run lays out the tone very well. Now that I have a foundation from the Mando Lessons site, I think I'll look into Steffy's for some more complex possibilities.
Yes, I'm confused about Thile and Davies' version. It's a different song for sure, but is also awesome, so....
The Thile Daves post is a Monroe tune, 2 different beasts.
Back to E. TN Blues, I have always liked Wayne Benson's picking on it on the IIIrd Tyme Out Back at the Mac live cd.
Great job Skip on that too! We also played the old jail there about a year ago, cool place.
This clip of Shad Cobb is listed as Tennesse Blues but is actually ETB. No mandolin, but Shad’s fiddling is a favorite of mine.

Here's a good one with a few pickers you might recognize:

And yes, you should also learn Tennessee Blues as well as East Virginia Blues. Just to keep you on your toes when one of them is called at a jam.

Hard to recognize Mojo without the fedora ;)
