via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
I am looking at adding one of these to my collection. Trouble is, no one around here has them, so it would be a sight unseen purchase via the interweb. So, has anyone had their hands on both? Which, if only choosing one, would you go with for gigging and of course, why?
Thank you folks!
Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
both models will benefit from some set up and adjustments by someone qualified . so go for the look or the better price . just be sure of a good return policy either way

Have you played either? Both?
Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
I hadn't heard of a Mandostang before reading your post. my search came up with one new for £278 in the UK - if you get one could you post a video as I am sorely tempted to smuggle another instrument past my wife. I have a the Mandostrat and love it. Didn't do anything in terms of set up because I don't know how and to my ears it sounds fantastic out of the box. I got mine for a hundred quid brand new so the strat is much cheaper than the stang. I do like the look of those Warren Ellis tenors as well. Oh dear, I could be in trouble.
Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
Me too! I have 2 Tomo electric ukes that I currently use to gig with the E dropped an octave. I also have an Epiphone LP tuned as a mando with nylon and my Crafter electric/acoustic that I use for the more gentle tunes. But... I want a 4 string, true mandolin scale to try and I really don't know which one to go with. I too would have to 'sneak' it past the wife...

Thanks i hadn't seen a mandostang , now i want one.
Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
I've got one of those Crafter models too, i bought it for recording but have never been entirely happy with the sound - but it grates on me less than contact pickups on my acoustics.
darryl I know what you mean about the many cheaper models perhaps paying for a more expenive mandolin, but I've only sold off one of my herd and couldn't bring myself to ever do it again - is there anything more satisfying than seeing mandolins all around the house!
Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
My Crafter has been fantastic over the years. I've never even had to turn the truss rod. A plus is that the electronics are passive, so I don't have to deal with the battery/location like on the ovation!

I have played the fender and have owned a few airline and eastwood instruments and tend to find decent but inexpensive pups and tuners . the neck angle may need to be changed a little , fret dressing and new pots . if they did use high end parts and more set up the instrument would cost a lot more . they are playable right out of the box and worth their cost and have a good body to upgrade upon . of course there will always be the occasional dog in the lot so hence the return policy

A year later, ok 355 days, I ordered my vintage cream Mandostang! Just need it to hurry and get here!!!!

Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
Spent about 10 minutes setting it up, then playing quite a bit through my Mooer pedals. So far, I really like it! The strings are a bit heavier than I'm used to using, but I'm sure I will get used to them.

Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
The mando strat is pretty awesome. I have the four string.
I thought it needed some kind of adjustment because the e string sounded different - kind of tinny and lower volume.
Turns out I was using the wrong kind of amp, an amp used with a mic for acoustic instruments and vocals, not for plugging in an electric guitar or mandolin.
With my very patient rock and roll brother helping me, I got the right amp, and the instrument sounded great. No problems. No set up required (verified by my brother).
Re: via buying online: Mando Strat or Mandostang???
I bought a Fender Mandostrat 4. Loved it and promptly bought a Mandostrat 8.
I swapped out the bridges for the 4 way Moongazer bridges, and swapped in the Almuse pickups.
Strobe tuner indicates it plays a little sharp near the nut on the lower frets, I might need to file the nut slots down a bit.
Once I do that, they'll be perfect.
