Schaller tuning machine repair?
See attached photos showing deterioration of some parts on my Schaller tuning machines. Those little white washers are all rotting out as time passes, the two circled ones are the worst. I wonder if anyone has faced this before, and if there’s a repair option before going all the way to replacement? Thanks for any help!Attachment 163052Attachment 163053

Have you contacted Schaller ? I would start there !
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
Except those aren't Schaller tuners. They appear to be Grovers.
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
First place I would try is Ace Hardware, in the boxes where they keep all the machine screws, springs, and such. They have all kinds of washers made of fiber, plastic, and rubber. They might very well have something that will work. You might have to dig for a while to find what you need, but it's surprising how much different stuff you can find in those boxes.
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
You also might check out the washers on this page. They list the sizes in the descriptions. You could also contact Grover. They might actually have those parts.
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
Thanks, Mike. I wasn’t confident in my identification of them, so I’ll take a look at what Grover has.
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
I had a set of schaller tuning machines put on my Washburn by a local Luthier, or so they claim at a music store. I have had problems with them being hard to adjust once the strings, E strings in particular, get up to tone. They feel like they are binding. I loosened the screw on the end of the tuning peg to release some of the tension and it seems to have fixed the issue. Does anyone know if these should be setup when installed or should I return them to Schaller?
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
If that fixed your problem they should be good to go as long as they aren't so loose that the strings go out of tune.
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
you might want to put some fingernail polish or something to stop the screw, which is now not tight, from loosening and getting lost.
Re: Schaller tuning machine repair?
The shaft is not loosening up to allow the string to detune. It is holding great.

Thanks for the nail polish suggestion though!
