looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
good morning every one. here is my problem, I would love to get out of New York, I am sick of living in the city but I need to be by a good hospital because I have a rare disease called achalasia. two months ago I spent 2 days in the hospital & I had 3 doctors working on me when some food got stuck inside of me & would not move down or come back up. please feel free to throw what your thinking at me. I would love to move to a nice medium town were the people are friendly & the price of a house is less than NYC.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
You can check out upstate,,Saratoga county,,people are halfway decent and we have hospitals...
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
how much snow do you guys get up there. that last snow storm we had last winter was a killer, even with my snow thrower. at 64 it is not that easy for me any more. I am starting to slow down. plus taxes are they high up there. you know Gov Como is a tax & spend kind of guy.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
How far from NYC are you thinking? Are you still working, or retired/similar? Birmingham, AL has like 10 large hospitals in a 10 mile radius, topped off with UAB, which is a level 1 trauma center and Children's
And if we're lucky there's no snow. but if there is, the place comes to a standstill:disbelief::)):)):))
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Fort Collins, CO. Great city, not that big, decent weather (milder than upstate NY) and enough playing to keep you happy. Lots of BG festivals out west, a LOT less people and some good hospitals.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
I love Brooklyn.
There is no place like it.
It's so not like Manhattan yet close by.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
I think the first thing I would do is find the locations of specialists for my disease and go from there.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
well, Yale New Haven Hospital is pretty good, I've heard. Which puts you in any of the cities and towns in fairfield county CT or over in Westchester.

Hi there, Richmond Va. might fit the bill. especially in the surrounding subs.
Dan.

Arizona ( Scottsdale area ) Mayo Clinic there also. NO snow !

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
PENNSYLVANIA! You have great hospitals in Pittsburgh plus a great music scene throughout the state and another plus some areas are very rural and many upon many hills! I should rephrase that Mountains!

I mean, you've basically described the majority of towns and suburb in the US.
You need to figure out what you want from your home, not just what you don't want.
For example, I've lived in and enjoyed
— Northern CA (SF Bay Area: East and South Bay as well as Sacramento and Redding areas)
— New Haven, CT
— Provo and Salt Lake City, UT
— Minneapolis, MN
— Portland, OR suburbs
— Nashville, TN (I currently live in a suburb)
Every one had great things going on, and the cost-of-living is all over the place but always cheaper than NYC. But also I know people who have hated every one of them.
So really, you need to figure out what you want and need (beyond just the hospital — almost every city has a good hospital somewhere — but can you afford the good one?) and work from there. Where are you going to work? How do you plan to make friends? Are you going to have a church or other social group? Do you want snow, heat, etc.? How do you feel about the local bugs? Do you need a local sports team?
If you can't answer those questions, start by throwing a dart at a map, assuming that's where you're going, and then asking the important questions about that place. Maybe you'll figure out it wouldn't work? Great! Do it again until you find a place that will.
But don't assume make the mistake of assuming that there's a perfect place for you and you just need to look hard enough to find it. Find a place that is "good enough" and then grow where you're planted.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Do NOT move to Colorado, it is awful. Weather is terrible, people are miserable, music scene is lousy. The doctors are quacks. I am telling everyone I can to not move here.
I wish you well.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Mike your funny I could like you. going out west is too far., an as for Alabama kegcrowe. do you think a good old New York boy could fit in down there ?. me & you could get along just fine because we have a love of music. you got to remember New Yorkers think differently than the rest of the country on how we see things. a city with the Mayo clinic would be a great place for me if the weather was a little on the warmer side. warmer & a half way good hospital, an me & my wife could finish out the rest of our life's real nice. I would like to thank every one for your help.

Tony, contrary to popular belief, most southerners get along well with others ;) and it's not really deliverance down here, banjo music aside:)). I know more northerners that are happy (or at least satisfied) with their move south than are not. Plus there's SEC football.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
A road trip is in order. I'm amazed when I travel around and there is a predominately white populous, it just seems so strange. I'm just too used to an ethnically diverse city. Hispanic, Asian, Indian/Pakistani, Ethiopian, Eastern European, they all contribute to this unique place. I'd miss it for the food alone. High up my priorities list is a taco truck I can walk to.
I'd look for mid sized cities with a university that has a medical school. Mike, you are way too late. Californians have already ruined Oregon and Washington. Colorado is already half way there.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Are you in the city?
I can't stand big cities, myself.
I last set foot in NYC the last day of my job (2012). Haven't been back and no plans to do so.
The important question:
Can you get work somewhere else?
You might take a look around Orange County, not all that far away.
Or perhaps in the Albany region.
Dutchess and Columbia counties are beautiful, too.
But you need money, and you need a job to live in those places.

Someone said Richmond Va, I thought Charlotsville Va.in either one you'd be a Damn Yankee ( you're a Yankee if you come down here for a visit then go back, you're a Damn Yankee if you cone down here and stay) all joking aside you will fit in very well if you don't start telling us how they did it up north, we ain't up north don't want to be up north and don't give a flying flip how it was done there. Both Richmond and Charlotsville have good hospitals.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
There's a large medical community in Durham/Chapel Hill NC (Duke and UNC) and a whole lot of acoustic music happening on most every day of the week, year-round.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Western Pa. The Acoustic Music Works is one of the best instrument stores for Mandolins and guitars, a healthy bluegrass scene , some of the best hospitals in the country, and low cost real estate. I like it.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
kegcrowe, sorry I passed judgement on a group of people. that's not right, but I always put my foot in my big Italian mouth. as for me you can keep the football just give me some good bluegrass & folk music plus some nice people to talk too & I will be very happy. oh one more little thing how is the pizza, hot dogs, pastrami down there. that seems to be very important to the people from New York.

Yeah,forget it,you definetly don't want to move here...good luck ..

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
The North Carolina suggestion sounds like a winner. Big retirement destinations and Universities with prominent medical schools should have the hospital you need in a non-urban setting.
I can empathize. I've had seven operations on my throat and the scar tissue makes it difficult to swallow. But that is mild compared to what you are going through. Good luck.
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
T.D. the very last snow storm was were I live in Queens N.Y. was over 23 inch's, maybe more in some spots with snow drifts. plus you guys upstate deal with snow storms so much better than us in NYC.

Tony, I took no offense whatsoever with your comments. As for the food, I doubt you'd find certain things to NYC standards, but You might be surprised at some awesome choices.

Life is a tradeoff. Lose pastrami, gain BBQ.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Pennsylvania has come up twice in this thread.
One of my friends moved from New York State ( Finger Lake area) to Erie, PA.
My friend moved to Erie for two reasons : close to Grandkids and close to Cleveland Clinic.
The downside is snow.
My friend reports that his cost of living is significantly lower in Pennsylvania compared to New York
We have been pout to visit and it is a very nice area.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
So, the elephant in the room is a job and medical insurance. If these are not a concern then literally you have the whole world available to you.
Places I have lived that I liked: Austin, TX; San Antonio, TX (I loved it my wife couldn’t get out fast enough); Monterey, CA (crowded and spendy now); Portland, OR where I now live. Branching out, add Munich, Germany to the list. Friends give Paris and Naples high marks.
Not so high on my list but loved by others: Columbus, GA (in the Army at the time, that should say it all); Asbury Park, NJ (too crowded). Bend, OR is quite popular among the upscale set. Lots of cultural activities. Bring cash and lots of it.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Have you had surgery? Why do you have to be close to hospital?
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
There’s Ann Arbor. East Lansing there will be snow but, the up side is Elderly!
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
yes I had surgery did not work that well for me. now my new gastro doctor wants me to get more surgery before I get any older. I just feel all beat up, inside & outside. I feel like I am at war with my own body & I am running out of ammo. just like that movie about pork chop hill, I am getting to tried fight. thanks for asking mandostew

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Suburban Philadelphia may fit the bill. Hospitalwise, we have University of Penn (literally saved my wife's life) and Jefferson. The burbs are more affordable and while getting into (any) city can be a pain, once you get past rush hour, it's not so bad. You have a farily decent music scene. You're not far from Delaware and Mike Bromberg's violin shop. And as far as the Arts go, there are tons of world class museums and venues in Philly.

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
Tennessee could be a reasonable choice. Vanderbilt in Nashville has a highly regarded medical center. University of Tennessee in Knoxville is also very well respected. And Knoxville ranks in the top 50 of best places to live according to U.S. News & World Report.
https://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/...ng/3410198002/
I now live in Colorado, but I advise anyone who is considering a move here to do quite a bit of research. It’s a beautiful state and if a person enjoys the outdoors, Colorado has a lot to offer. The state has a very lively music scene and other terrific cultural offerings. And Colorado has become a melting pot of diverse cultures and ethnicities. But there are trade-offs. It’s expensive to live here. In some areas, like the Denver–Boulder metro, housing can be difficult to come by and what is available is unaffordable for many. The medical arena is about average, with the exception of National Jewish, which is a nationally top-ranked medical facility for respiratory diseases. That said, the population continues to grow, much to the distaste of “natives.”

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
I guess I would prioritize my needs first. Get the operation over with, from a doctor/hospital you like. THEN, after you are healed, ask yourself:
1. Do I need to be close to kids/grandkids? Or not?
2. Do I want to downsize?
3. Do I want to get away from snow/cold weather and how badly?
4. Can I do without favorite foods/culture?
5. Would I be happy in a small village, let's say an hour from a major city?
Anyway, those kind of questions. Nowadays, internet is everywhere. Online shopping is everywhere. Cable is everywhere. ATM's are everywhere. Online banking is everywhere. Those kind of questions are no longer an issue.
I second the South, having made the move from the North 30 years ago. FIRST, you won't believe how much cheaper everything is. Property tax will be 20 percent of what you are paying AND THAT is on a house that cost you 20 percent of what one would cost in New York.....or less. TRUE, you can't buy good pizza or bagels in the South, but there are Southern specialities you may develop a taste for. Yes, there is culture shock, but not as much today as even 30 years ago. I am noticing kids today don't even have as strong of accents as they had 30 years ago -- due to? cable? internet? pop culture? The Kardashians? So, it is do-able. I came for the music, especially the Blues, which was like going back in time to the 30's. I am glad I got to see it performed in a real juke joint.....
AND, no snow!
Anyway, everyplace has its pluses and minuses, so.................GOOD LUCK!

Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
For Medical needs how about Rochester, MN ?
Mayo Clinic has 2 other places in the retirement states of Fla & Az.
Or a country with better healthcare :disbelief:?
-
Re: looking to move, but I have no clue where ?.
South Africa has some very good hospitals with insanely cheaper prices than the US, I actually know someone who flew to Cape town from the states to get surgery, because it was cheaper than getting the surgery in America. Now, there's no music scene to speak of.....

Don’t give up.I know how you feel. Two years ago I had a double transplant(heart and kidney)I live 60 miles from Manhattan in Warwick NY and it is a great country town with lots of open farmland.Plenty of music around and I play in a band.My hospital is 50 miles away, but there is good one 20 miles. There are hospitals close but they are grade B and I stay away from them.I have a good gastro doctor here but the others are in Bergen county 20 miles.Maybe travel around Hudson valley area and look around.

Jamie is making a good point. The greater Philadelphia/Wilmington area has a lot going for it.
I moved from New England to be near Philly for four years (Vet school for my wife). That was forty years ago. We'll never leave. I am in a very rural, agricultural part of Southern NJ. Very quite and peaceful, but Philly is only one hour away and Wilmington DE is about a half hour. I really have the best of both worlds.
Still, why just guess? Why not get yourself a small camper of some sort and do an extended road trip, or a few shorter ones, and check all these places out? You are getting great suggestions here. You'd probably have a great time, you could hook up with a bunch of us Cafe friends along the way for some good picking, and you could make a choice based on your own experiences.
Whatever you decide, I wish you all the best with this adventure. It is great to continue to be adventurous even as we age. Go for it!

That's exactly how I feel about Texas.
Alas, it hasn't stopped them from flooding the state.

I was going to suggest Charlotte, since everyone else in NYC has relocated there.:grin:
