Marty Stuart cd recommendation
Looking for recommendations for a Marty Stuart cd featuring mandolin / guitar picking. Would like something similar to the music played on the Marty Stuart, Carter Web video posted by Darylcrisp. Not interested in purchasing his traditional bluegrass. I can handle an occasional grass tune but not an entire cd.
I don't think he can be dismissed as anything less than another one of the greats regardless of what genre he is playing:mandosmiley:.
My thanks in advance.
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
Huge Marty fan here, and I will say the only sensible recommendation is to listen to everything and buy what you love.
You said it yerself he’s one of the greats!

Buying them all is a stretch. Opinions out there on THIS ONE'S GONNA HURT YOU? other recommendations?
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
His "Live at the Ryman" CD is the only album of his that I am aware of where he plays mandolin pretty much the whole thing. All of his other releases are more electric or acoustic guitar with a mandolin instrumental maybe at the end of the album (Ghost Train: The Studio B Sessions). Hope this helps!
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
Not the absolute most mando-focused but I really like Busy Bee Cafe
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
There are some Youtube videos of Marty and the Superlatives playing live with Steve Miller. Pretty cool.

Absolutely check out "The Pilgrim". Great playing and a great story line threaded thoughout the entire album.which is a 20 year old album re-released in 2021. Good stuff you should check out. ;)

Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
I can't recommend an album but, I really came to appreciate Marty during the Ken Burns documentary on Country Music. Not sure if you have seen this youtube interview with Marty? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqQ_2DW9Hc4 I watched this the other day, and it was interesting. He mentioned an album that he said best represented him and I think it was "The Pilgrim" as mentioned above. If you dont want to watch the whole think I think he mentioned it towards the end (maybe 2/3 or 3/4 through).
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
Just downloaded Live at the Ryman. Wow.
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
Just watched the Ken Burn's Documentary upon Northwest Steve's recommendation. Great video. Makes me appreciate Marty Stewart even more. Ordered two cds from Amazon. Live at the Ryman and The Pilgrim. Live at the Ryman should arrive tomorrow and The Pilgrim in a few days.
Not looking for music reminiscent of Marty's early days with Mr. Flatt or with more than a minimum of gospel tunes.
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
Received and played LIVE AT THE RYHMAN several times. GREAT cd for someone looking for a cross section of music genres. I usually avoid bluegrass, though I did enjoy the couple of "grass" tunes on this cd with exception to the first tune with train sounds. I would recommend this cd to anyone that is into Marty Stuart.
Now looking forward to getting THE PILGRIM as suggested by a previous poster. T Y
Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
THE PILGRIM arrived today. I'm enamored with it, as it suits my taste in music. Classic country with minimum of train noises, minimal use of banjos, and minimal use of mandolin chop chords (not that those are bad, just not for me).
Thank you for that recommendation.
Just ordered HONKYTONKIN and HILLBILLY ROCK.

Way out West is a great record, and accords with the sort of classic country you outlined above.
And seeing him live with the Fabulous Superlatives is a joy. If he's in your area, be sure to go: every member of the band is Nashville royalty.

I'll have to check out WOW and Miltown is correct re: Nashville royalty. They never fail to impress individually and as a band.

Re: Marty Stuart cd recommendation
I've bought four cds. My favorites are Honkytonkin,What I Do Best and Hillbilly Rock, most likely because they feature the genre of music I lean towards, though neither is a great representation of Marty's phenomenal picking.
The good news is I just heard he is coming out with 3 new albums. Looking forward to these and hope that he does not include any gimmicky things like train noises and dogs barking.
