The original was "I'll twine mid the ringlets of my raven black hair" It was a composed song in the 1860s, not a folk song. A.P. Carter mangled the lyrics badly in several places or heard a version with mangled lyrics which they recorded in 1928. Here is a video with Linda Williams explaining it all. She and Robin went back to the original sheet music for their version. There is an even nicer rendition with Jimmy Gaudreau on mandolin on their Visions of Love cd but I could not find it on You Tube. They also found an additional verse or two the Carter's did not have
