The most amazing right hand rhythmic sense ever.

Yes, it goes to show that an on-stage performer doesn't have to act like a sick monkey in order to move a tune along nicely and project a strong feeling of rhythm.

It's way more than that.

If this is referencing Thile.... Thile's right hand has more ability and rhythm than my whole body. He can dance around all he wants.

If this IS in reference to Chris Thile, the poster deserves a talking to. Pathetic comment.

Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..
Why is this thread turning into perceived slights to Thile? I thought it was supposed to be about the video posted. The subtle rhythmic licks that Tater uses really push the melody while keeping a terrific back up to the tune. It is a great way to play solo mandolin

Might be safe to say Mike has moved beyond Monroe style. That's straight outta Compton.

He really does have his own thing. It is a solid nod to the father but Compton has his own distinct style! I have been wearing out the "Stomp" CD lately!
Great video, thanks for the post!!

Mike does his own thing and fills a space that few live in. There are shades of McCoury, hints of Monroe and his offshoots, black country blues, hard core. I admire him for sticking with it and enhancing it. Plus, he absolutely maximizes the tone coming out of that wooden box.
Post 3 adds nothing.

Is it ok to just say I liked it and enjoyed it?

Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..
Great video! I've been working on that tune for a while now. And while he did have some minor flubs in it, his execution was great. It has lots of character. I wish I could master the all-downstroke rhythm like he does in certain parts. That's one of those Monroe things that seems simple, but takes a lot of work to get it sounding right. It's always great to see a pro make it look easy.

Check out Rotten Taters, a great one he did solo in Australia and the live recording with Joe Newberry.

Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..
Like to add that Mike has created a wonderful course that teaches the styling of Bill Monroe, including the roots of the music that Bill developed...he includes styling collected from many blues artists. If you have the chance to attend a Compton workshop or his online classes, do so! (Not to mention, it's a great opportunity to meet one of the nicest guys in the profession!) PS No financial interest!

Compton is a genius. There is so much mystery in his playing, so much I don't understand. And to think there are people that dismiss it.

WOW!!!!!!! He killed it. His right hand is one of the best

Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..
I don't have a problem with post #3, they simply made a true statement. It is perfectly acceptable in my view to be opinionated, we all are or why would anyone post anything and why have a forum? That's what they're for, sharing of information, some of which we may or may not agree with at any given time. Allow that and move on if you don't agree rather than poke the person because you personally don't think it "adds" anything, it doesn't necessarily have to.
Great video of a good friend doing what he does best. Thanks for posting it.

Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..
I don't believe that Mike has an instructional DVD available, or does he? If not, a musician of MC's talent should have a couple DVD lessons published by now.

Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..
We don't need to derail the subject of Mike's playing by getting into a discussion about what is appropriate or not on the forum, so this will stop. We have moderators for that purpose. We do not support expressions of speech that include hateful, uncalled for personal attacks on the character of people that members have never met. We had a bout of that recently. I will not host a forum that engages in this. This is clearly covered in the forum guidelines. There's plenty of room on the internet for that other kind of behavior and those wishing to engage in that are welcome to find those places. No one was named so I'm going to assume it was a poor choice of words.

Thinking on it, there was a homemade DVD floating around of Mike standing in front of a classroom full of pickers, showing his thing. It was actually rather well-made for what it was. This was probably done 10 years ago or so.

Re: "Monroe style" doesnt quite tell the whole story..
I attended one of Mike's workshops about 15 years. It was truly inspirational. He's one fine fellow too!

I have that one, unless I got an especially bad copy, it was hard to hear clearly. He has been under pressure to get a DVD but it takes a lot of time and he's a busy man.
