Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
Just talked with a pedal steel player using a BOSS needle style tuner, and said it works great for that set-up. We also had a good discussion of Peterson tuners, strobe-light vs digital and all things tuning. Horses for courses.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I'm eyeing the new Peterson strobo stomp hd, Buffered or true bypass.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I had the earlier version of the Peterson Strobo Stomp pedal with the orange display, back when I was using a small pedal setup. It worked fine; very easy to read, but then I've used the Peterson tuners of various kinds for years. If you're not used to a strobe-type display it might take a little adjustment, but I think it's the best way to show how close you are to being in tune, and how close is "good enough" for a given situation.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
the good ol' Boss TU-3 is solid, reliable, accurate, and cheap on the used market.
The Polytune pedal is also rock solid, just as accurate as anything else, and locks in FAST. I have three TU-3's on stage and one Polytune which I picked up last minute a couple years ago. When.\/if any of the TU-3's take a dump I'll replace 'em with a Polytune due to how fast it locks on.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I am using the TC Electronics Polytune 2 on my fiddle/mandolin pedal board, and it works great. Polytune feature doesn't really work well other than with guitar, but the tuner is very sensitive and precise, and is easy to read on a dark stage or in bright sunlight. It also has no problems tuning the higher pitched strings of fiddles and mandolins versus guitar tuning. Many tuners struggle with the violin E. This on does not!

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I have a Polytune (full-sized, battery operated) for my mando/Martin rig and a mini (no battery) on the pedal board for my Telecaster and both work great. Locks in super fast and easy to read onstage. No pops either.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
The Polytune Noir is on my board. The only possible replacement would be a Sonic Research ST 300 mini.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
For my electric guitar and bass setups, I use TC Electronics' Polytune Mini. Works really well, very accurate.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
Ever notice how everyone's tuner is the best? hahaha, I find it funny. Not all are created equal you need to decide what you're after. I suggest trying a few at a store. If they have an HD Peterson model clip plus or the new stomp try one they will all have the same basic reactions while tuning. It isn't for everyone but I was opposite I hated how some just locked right on. I was never convinced they were where I wanted them, with the strobo I can see the slight variance. It certainly didn't help that I used a 599 auto strobe on my bench. I used it as the benchmark for all other clip on's and they all fell short for me. But do you really hear those slight differences? What can you bond with? you won't know until you try some. Pedals are even more touchy, is it bright enough, does it suck tone? How well can you lock onto it with your eyes? I saw one that was plenty bright but I needed a bit of time to focus in on the display. Will you use it in bright places? Darl Places? etc.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
The TC Polytune is a VERY good foot pedal tuner anyway you strike it. A good second to this would be the Korg Pitchblack Custom. Also very good.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
TC Polytune. These are a seriously fine tuner!

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I got the Polytune 3 a few months back for my electric guitars and it's pretty great...:whistling:

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
TC Electronic Poly Tune pedals only have slight differences and they have nothing to do with the tuning function. The Mini versions and full size pedal versions have the same functions... full size one can run on a 9V battery if needed, the mini has to have a power supply. All versions of the pedal have both "normal" tuning mode and a strobe mode. Both are very quick, accurate etc. The Strobe mode does increase the accuracy percentage a little. Displays are bright and easy to see and read. As far as V2 and V3 tuners from TC, the V3 adds a buffer option for those running a lot of pedals.... thats about it.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
If I was looking for a floor tuner, I'd go with a Sonic Research model. Their readout is super fast, accurate and intuitive. I've had the original bench model for many years.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
Korg Pitchblack for the win. BTW, Boss pedal tuners with paint missing, and hundreds of hours on stage are priced like diamonds. Pre-owned Boss tuners tend to be ridiculously overpriced.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
Have had the Sonic Research for many years and still absolutely love it. Fast strobe tuner, prefer it to every other tuner I own include Peterson clip on.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
The Korg custom pedals have a great visual display, and are very accurate. I use a hand held one for home and studio, and it is extremely accurate and easy to tune.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
had not heard of the sonic thanks

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
Piezo pickup and most any stomp tuner will work I have a Boss of that sort.
this is their latest https://www.boss.info/us/products/tu-3/
not using it much (no stage gigs) so I have a intellitouch PT10 XL with a 1/4" input
works with a clip on, pickup made to grip the banjo-mandolin bridge directly..

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I bought a boss tu-3 for $55 off eBay a few months ago and it works fine

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
so I ended up with the sonic, it takes a bit to get used to but very quick which is something that I like. thanks for the help

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I'm looking at the 2 petersons in $130 range to replace my Peterson Strobo flip, either the stomp pedal or the strobo HD that i can clamp onto my pedal steel. Tuning PSG's and lap steels is tricky without the Peterson. I haven't checked but maybe there are mando sweetened tunings uploaded in their website/database ("Peterson Connect"
Should be obvious but i destroyed the mike on one Strobo flip by cleaning w/vacuum cleaner. The other mike seems to work pretty well for mandolin one string at a time when others are damped/muted.

Re: man I need a good tuner foot pedal model. not clip on
I love my Strobo Plus HD but found the metronome had a bit of a learning curve to it. I needed to refer to the manual. My go-to on the Mandolin is the Strobo clip HD but this new Strobo Stomp had my attention for a board addition. I'm holding out for a few youtube reviews of it. I need a buffer and do not have a tuner pedal so it may be a win-win for a reasonable price.
