Help! YouTube blocked my video
Hey guys I need some help. I just uploaded a video of myself playing hotel California on guitar, (fingerstyle, no singing) and it’s been blocked by YouTube. What should I do? There’s a bunch of similar videos I’ve seen that aren’t blocked, and I want mine unblocked. I don’t monetize, and I’m lucky to get twenty views. Any suggestions?
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
I'll add that the block was for copyright issues (content ID)
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
I do t think you have an angle to unblock it since it’s copy written.
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
You can appeal the decision and for justification explain that your video version is for educational purposes and no monetary gain. At some point, the writers and publishers have the power to grant/deny us permission. Hope it works out for you!

Ok thanks, but how do I appeal? I couldn't figure it out from Youtube's help center
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
Good luck, Gunnar.
Sometimes vids are blocked because of the title used. Be sure to write: (cover) or (guitar cover)
Some people do actually try to get hits on YouTube by implying that their song is the original, at least to get people to stop and listen.
Another one is where people write ‘song by X’ when they mean this version was later sung by X, again implying that X actually wrote it. Then the actual vid posted is not even actually sung by X, it’s the cover
Again another is where there are any symbols, insignia whatever in the background of the vid that could be considered politically, ethically, whatever, offensive in the US then there’s a problem -and remember that each culture has it’s different taboos, some quite contradictory.
You say that you would only get maybe 20 views. The problem is that if it’s by 20 psychopaths, and these people are viewing for a certain reason, then you may have an issue! :) (or not)
Usually if you just stick to the song etc then it’s cool.
Some people put too much of themselves into a cover then find it difficult to work out where the original writer was coming from, then again sometimes it’s great.
You could repost the vid, say hi at the beginning and then do a heavy metal intro (to confuse the censor algorithm) and have ‘cover’ in the title? If that’s what you want to do.

Ok, thanks. I can't repost (at least not right now) as I pay for my own internet, and uploading is expensive and time consuming. I didn't say cover in the title, but I made the title with my standard pattern: (composer when applicable) song title - instrument - my name, and I started doing that based on other fingerstyle guitarists channels. I've asked a few other places, I might try to contact YouTube directly if I can figure out how. It's possible that being in Africa I get automatically marked as spam

YouTube has a formalized appeal process for this kind of thing these blocks are not atypical. You'll just have to read up on exactly how you start one. It is routine. In fact did you enter something like "how to appeal a YouTube censor" in the YouTube search bar? I would imagine there are several dozen videos on how do an appeal?
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
The Eagles block everything and there is nothing you can do about it.

Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
Ok well I figured out how to protest my blockage (had to use a computer) I can't watch a video about it cuz I used all my internet uploading that video. Just do a quick YouTube search for "hotel California fingerstyle guitar" and you'll see that they definitely don't censor all of them. I am slightly flattered that it was able to recognize my playing, but maybe that's cuz I'm an optimist?
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
What you are running into is "Hotel California Auto-Block." Similar to "Wagon Wheel Auto-Block." No more renditions are allowed.
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
Just so you are clear on this, YouTube has no control whatsoever if a band, their management or the estate of the artist choose not to let their music be played in any form on YouTube. The Eagles, and maybe Fleetwood Mac and a bunch more are in this category. This is not an issue with YouTube but the artists.
This is not to be confused with demonetizing a video, where any money goes to the artist as airplay.
Now if you want to record an Eagles tune on a CD, the Eagles can't tell you not to as long as they get publishing royalties. If you want to put an Eagles tune on an instructional video, you need a contractual agreement.
I have to laugh at the Eagles' miserly protection of their copyright rights. Listen to the intro of Angie by the Rolling Stones, then listen to Hotel California, recorded four years later. Jagger/Richards could sue the pants off the Eagles. I guess they just have better things to do.
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
-maybe The Eagles have Lawyers who somehow work on a percentage of The Eagles total net worth? Or the two record companies have a history?
Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
Happened to me before.
Were you wearing pants ?

Oh man! You guys are right, they blocked my Eagles vid link too!
What is happening to this funny old world? People aren’t allowed to play Hotel California in music shops either!
Here’s a screen shot of the link I sent, at least you can see the musicians.

Re: Help! YouTube blocked my video
Well after disputing the claim, my video has been unblocked! I have played hotel California in guitar center before (on an 8 string guitar!) With no problems.
Here's my video if you want to see what they had trouble with

For that matter, "The thrill is Gone" and "House of the Rising Son" (particularly) are in a similar minor blues form. Great observation about "Angie" showing that "Hotel California" isn't unique in the progression of minor blues cords used. "Hotel California" is an elaboration this, which, as such, is very interesting as a songwriting approach. :mandosmiley:

Watch the YouTube video on Rick Beato's channel for what makes Angie unique. It's part of his what makes this song great series.
