Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
While waiting for "Without Getting Killed or Caught", the documentary about Guy and Susanna Clark and Townes Van Zant to come out, just wondering what you all have seen and would recommend? We don't have to restrict the list to Bluegrass or Country.
Here are a few that I have seen already and would recommend.
Ken Burns Country Music ( I know kind of obvious)
The Wrecking Crew
Laura Canyon
The Festival Express
Beware of Mr. Baker
20 Feet From Stardom.
Thanks in advance for your response and apologies to the moderators if this has been already covered.
Thanks
Jim
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Good list. Also:
Louie Bluie (mandolin player, Howard Armstrong)
Standing in The Shadows of Motown (similar to Wrecking Crew)
The Last Waltz (The Band)
Blues (miniseries, Scorcese)
Jazz (miniseries, Ken Burns)
Hail, Hail Rock 'n Roll (Chuck Berry)
The T.A.M.I. Show (not a documentary but an enjoyable 1964 rock concert film)
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Great suggestions here — I’ll add Searching for Sugar Man.
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
http://www.magpictures.com/thewreckingcrew/ If you listened to music in the 60s or 70s you listened to these players.
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Great idea for a thread, and great lists of recommendations. I've seen several of them, but many I haven't now want to.
I'll add:
- Muscle Shoals
- The Eagles Documentary
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Another vote for Standing In the Shadows Of Motown
Also:
Revival - The Sam Bush Story
Classic Albums - Dark Side Of The Moon
The Kids Are Alright
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice
The Weavers: Wasn't That a Time!
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
I don't know if your tastes run towards Irish music, but there are some excellent documentaries on the Irish TV channel TG4.
You might enjoy this one on guitarist Steve Cooney

or bouzouki player Alec Finn

or piper Liam O'Flynn

There are plenty more. Beautifully done.

Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
If I can add a few more:
Down Home Music: A Journey Through the Heartland 1963 (great variety of singers and musicians across American South and Southwest)
Music from The Big House (Can. blues singer, Ritta Chiarelli at Angola Prison, Louisiana)
Fiddlers of James Bay (Cree people in Canadian north)
Rebel Music: The Bob Marley Story
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Blaze Foley: Duct Tape Messiah (I did not care for the movie "Blaze" made years later)
Gypsy Caravan
Grateful Dawg
Heartworn Highways
Eat That Question Zappa
And while not documentary movies....pick up any of the Oxford American annual music issues. Make sure you get the cd with it. Each one is an amazing musical documentary in itself.
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
For the Love Of the Music, about Club 47 in Cambridge MA in the '60's.
As one who hung out there, I was transported back to my "fan just learning the music" days.

Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
I don't think anyone has mentioned Flamekeeper: The Michael Cleveland Story. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Oh there are so many coming out - very cool. I've always appreciated the resource of ytube - it's so vast for the player and student.. just yesterday I ran into a couple of deep hour-long docs on some of my favorite music.. nflix comes out with a new one occasionally - seems I saw a very good one on bird last year..there's the Lee Morgan one and of course another Coltrane.. the James Baldwin one is very good.
Not vid but new one out 2 days ago - lots of rock guitar but also the young'ns on the scene now. https://youtu.be/u60dfVLYHnY

I've seen many of the excellent suggestions above. I'll add 'Rising Low', gotta represent the low end!
Re: Looking for Music Documentary Recommendations
Not really a documentary in the sense. Chris Hillman at the Library of Congress telling the story of his career.

“Revival” the Sam Bush story is a good one. Lots of fellow mandolin players interviewed. From Thile, Hull, to late Jeff Austin.

I was listening to a bunch of Lea Bertucci this evening and ran across this one on Delia Derbyshire. https://youtu.be/n2dvGQ32q8g
