    Go to camp and jam. Don't need to sit in the sun a hundred yards away to hear bands that I can hear in comfort at home. Would much rather buy a cd and listen.

    Most rock players do it all by ear. Books like the real book are great to get the basic chords but you need to get the fine points by ear.

    I use cards to practice all my fiddle tunes( well over a hundred). Pull out the card play the tune put it on the bottom of stack. Helps to keep them under my fingers for when you get to a jam.

    Stuart, I have Band in a Box so make back up tracks. There is a version of the Real Book for BIAB so I get all the lead sheets from it. Used Pete's instructions for the chords and now I'm strumming...

    Play tunes. Each tune has licks in it. Your jazz playing will be proportional to the number of tunes you know. It's the same with fiddle tunes.
