This may be of interest- particularly the discussion around the lack of a string tree and a workaround using shorter tuners.

Simon - try the Bodhran by Mark Stone, an album of Irish rhythms played, not suprisingly, on the bodhran. If you use slow down software you can set the tempo to whatever you want. It’s still a bit...
I've reached a stage in my playing where I'm starting to put in ornamentation and simple variations, and trying to do so on the fly. It doesn't always come off but a great learning tool is to video...
Dang why have I been messing about with blu tac all these years- thanks Paul. One thing I did ditch a few years ago was “locking” the treble strings where you go under then over ( or something like...
OK my bad to simplify it as a reel. I was talking about Irish Jigs. I should have said that Tim O'Brien plays Irish Jigs DUD DUD. The piece if music you linked to is great but not an example of an...
sblock, your link was to Tim O'Brien playing a set of reels. Tim plays Jigs DUD DUD

Honestly Bob if Jigs aren’t grabbing you don’t bother with them. They require a completely different approach and arguably years to perfect. I don’t think any of this time will benefit your bluegrass...
There’s an anatomical reason thar your little finger is able to have a mind of its own. It’s not tethered to the adjacent finger in the way that the middle and ring fingersare. In other words...
English, Irish , Scottish or mixed session? Being in England the range of sessions is huge and complicates things somewhat. An English session is not a bad place to get back into trad - there tends...
It's not as interactive as Mike Marshal's site but there is a forum where you can post questions to Marla and I posted a link to a video of me playing one of the tunes and she gave some very helpful...
I think no matter what level you are at you'd get a lot from Marla's course. I remember you saying over on the social group that you struggle with reels because of the pace but the biggest thing I've...
Thanks. D'Addario J74s and Dunlop Primetone 1.4.
Hope to make one of Simon Mayor's workshops one day - great player and entertaining character.
Anyone else taking the Irish mandolin course on Peghead Nation taught by the wonderful Marla Fibish and care to share a video of their progress? She's teaching Irish slides at the moment. It's really...
I think that is the joke, at least that's how I appreciated it having started playing through it expecting to be able to put my best Jig picking pattern on it and had a straight up rendition of Jesu...
Learn/listen tab ar the top of the home page then socialgroups and then look for the song a week group you'll find it all there going back over 5 years. There's also a newbie group who do tune...
DUD DUD, the 8th notes are grouped in 3s with the beat on the first 8th note. You don't have to strum ever 8th note, miss some out but stick to this patern. This works for picking the melody as well.
Hand made instruments - everyone is unique so it is difficult to generalise (not as consistent as some makes I have found). I love my 2011 504

2,1 then 3
1 sounds like an oval hole, hollow sound but with overtones tipping into tinny. Could be a flat top
2 sounds like an oval hole, hollow sound but much more focussed than 1 - arch top
3...
I get your point, but I think a typo confused me for a bit- I think you meant to say the D on the G string gives it a higher pitch than your B. Personally I think a G chord chops a lot better when...
Great thread - lovely version Will. Really interesting info John. Haven't been up the west coast for a few years - soft lowlander who doesn't like the midges! Was thinking of going next month but...
The Eastman 504 just back from a re-fret with evo gold. Time for a Jig

Just done a test with my Eastman 815. I love it - couldn't be easier to use.

Are you sure it is the neck width and flat fingerboard that is the problem, rather than the string spacing? I have mandolins with flat and radiused boards and various neck profiles and can switch...
