a tube amp has less headroom than a solid state amp generally speaking . but I prefer tubes for amp tone and crunch or distortion . but if running a lot of effects or modulators through an amp then...

It is a big long journey , so many options with electronics . just have fun checking stuff out . amps ,effects processors , pick ups, every day some new pedal seems to come out or some new effects...
i use flatwounds on everything electric or acoustic

As far as the low C string , you have to adapt to how it sounds . it will not have that tight mandolin sound you get from gdae strings . a 14 1/2 scale helps a small amount . think guitar in drop D...

these are both entry level instruments . you might as well get the one you like the look of , or better yet buy the one you can find used for the cheapest price .
You can use a small tube preamp to get the "warm tube" tone , you do not need to buy a whole tube amp . this will give you the option to remove the tube preamp or keep it in the loop as the situation...

The notes are far less important than the rhythm . get a book that is only about rhythm patterns and use it with a metronome .
I used joel rothmans - Teaching Rhythm - for all instruments / class...
One of my biggest favorites is Sandy . you know I discovered her about 23 yrs ago through Fairport but it was only a few years ago that I found out she was the vocals with Plant in Battle of Evermore...
you can stuff the mando with tissue , I have done this to a cheap mando and it is easily reversible
