Dr. Cohen found a "noticeable" lowering of one particular frequency due to the Virzi. Other modes affected as well. Cohen admits that his listening conclusion were based in his own hearing, so...
They lower the resonant frequency of the air chamber by adding mass to the top. If that makes a particular mando sound better with a lower resonant frequency, then the mando will sound better.
I'll just post my notes I've saved to my computer over the years. Probably the only measurements that would be valuable to you is near the bottom, Macrostie's measurements he did on my Gibson A5L...
I wouldn't worry about the illusion that the bridge is sinking into the top. If you are worried, look for other pics of mandos at the same angle and notice that the string reflections always seem to...
Secret.
Have the shipper mark GIFT on the box. UPS treats it like gold and won’t hold them.
My brother has been at UPS for 30 years, been a driver for 20.
Thanks! I had to check that tab, and it appears for some reason there are rests that are missing in the tab. And that seems to be something the tab builder did at that time, left out rests and just...
I'm posting this here because many of us play guitar in addition to mando. And the fact that Tony's work reaches beyond just guitar, influencing other musicians no matter what instrument they play. ...
If building to Griffith Loar A standards, you may wanna pay more attention to the arching.
Dudenbostel described it as "long and low". I wouldn't trust the Siminoff plans either. One reason...
Right Jim, I feel the shape of the arch/plates is significantly more important than the thickness.
Even minor differences in the arch will affect the strength of the plate.
The shape of your arch will determine the thickness.
You don’t need to wet sand, just sand.
I like to think that the culprit is something in the spray gun itself. Clean those things throughly.
Finally, this is the sensor I bought.

You also need the Go Link to connect it to a computer:

I bought a device from Vernier and had to dismantle it a bit. Glued in a regular disc magnet at a specific distance from the circuit, and used Vernier software to take measurements.
I bought a...
I built my own magic probe a few years ago. Cost about $100.
I'd give it more time. If it's only been a week, give it another week.
Strong candidate for fretboard removal, and installation of carbon fiber rod.
Easy peasy.
Every mandolin is built with a crack right down the centerline of the top.
Until someone clearly understands why good tone is achieved in one mando and not the other, I'll withhold any opinion as to what does or does not improve said tone.
As of right now, we don't know...
I use an angle grinder with 40 grit pads for roughing inside and out.
I sand the top to 400-600 grit before staining.
If it's wood, it's light, and stiff, and has few defects or run-out, you can use it.
Pine doesn't know it's pine. Sometimes pine thinks it the world's best spruce.
I have and what it normally proves is that any differences in tone/sustain require a somewhat significant amount of mass to be added or removed.
More important is where the mass is added or...
Always love when an Isabel Mandolin owner posts some sounds of their new Mando. I built this mando to be played in an "intimate" setting with fewer instruments, but Bryan found a way to bring out...
