Re: Hoffee vs new Calton vs Pegasus vs ?

I think that they are all excellent cases. I went with the Hoffee. I think it is the most likely to survive being tossed out of a pickup doing 55mph. I have zero science to support that, but his...

    Re: To Gibson or not?

I vote with Jimmy. It sounds like you may be wanting to give a better sounding experience as a wedding present. There are always exceptions, but the chances that the bride will recognize that you...

    Re: Weighty Question

Thanks for all you have contributed. I tried to report what I experienced in a way that was true to my perceptions. Without data I was left to question my own subjectivity, so I finished with an...

    Re: Weighty Question

Thanks to those who have responded. The conversation went where I hoped that it would: if, what, and how we hear changes to our instruments. Nothing here that I haven't read before over the years...

Re: To pick guard or not to pick guard

I agree with Tobin. The more important question is not about a pick guard's looks or usefulness , it is about you relationship with your teacher. If you can't trust your teacher, find another one.

    Re: New Custom Mandolin

My first guitar was not custom made, it was one that my grandfather reassembled from pieces scattered throughout his shop. At nine, it felt custom made for me and drew me into the music and...

Sent a note off to Sim before I finished reading that you had got it to him. Great story, and glad that you and Sim got together before he goes back to England.

Re: I have been playing wrong all my life

You might try not worrying so much. What is a private lesson teacher for, anyway? It doesn't appear that you had to audition your right hand picking technique to get in. Congrats on making it into...

Re: Learning a tune in multiple keys

As others are saying, "It depends on your goals." I don't practice a fiddle tune in different keys and in FFCP because I am trying to learn the tune, that was were I started. I practice it in...
  13. Re: Practice time - all at once or several small sessions?

Different strokes for different folks. I used to practice for a hour at a time because I got the idea that it was the "right" way to do it. I now practice for about a half-hour or so at a time, but...

I enjoy changing strings, just one more way to play with my mandolin.

Way more analysis than necessary. Play what makes you happy, and who wants to associate with people who knock what kind of mandolin you play?
