Yes John. The bridge suits the new fan-frets. The nut remains in the same place which makes it more comfortable (less strain) playing barre chords on the lower frets

CGDA in viola is alto viola. GDAE in viola is tenor viola. I happen play an 18” tenor viola. Then if you tune a small cello to GDAE it’s generally called tenor violin
Here’s the first of a batch of fan-fret tenor banjos as promised. The angle of the nut is almost square. It actually becomes square at the 3rd fret. As Explorer has explained above fan-frets aren’t a...
I’ve put some thought into what you’ve said. In the next batch of fanned frets that l make I will have two with the nut in the ‘square’ position & an angled bridge. This should facilitate those...
I’m not an expert by any means. All the instruments that I’ve made in the last 3 years have had fan frets. There’s a batch of 8 fan fretted banjos coming through the workshop now. What I can say for...
I think for left arm reach it’s all about discipline, keeping the left arm tucked well under the fiddle. Lots of trad players seem to lack some of those points & still play great music but I still...
I don’t think that I have any different a technique than usual. I obviously play Irish trad on it with a strong trad style. I took lessons from a well respected fiddle teacher from a Gaelic speaking...
Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I use a baroque style cello bow.
There was a long history of trial & error plus thousands of euro to get a working tenor violin. I ended up getting this one off 18” built to viola proportions. It has a 405mm stop & uses standard...
I have even angled the bridge on my tenor violin to enrich the tone on its bottom ‘G’ string. I suppose that makes it a multi-scale instrument even though it is only by about a 10mm differential....
Yes I can understand how that can happen. It is important to get the angle of the frets right to match the ergonomics of the way the player's wrist moves up & down the fretboard. This is particularly...
204053 I’m trying to get the tenor guitar photo onto the thread but it doesn’t seem to want to work.
I make fan fretted tenor banjos, so I got a custom built fan fretted tenor guitar in carbon fibre. The scale lengths are 23” (E) to 24” (G). The ergonomics are such that it has a comparable stretch...
I just take them all as they come. It’s surprising your brain just switches to what ever you are playing just like jumping into your partner’s car. Being a cheapskate I just use the 1 pick for...
There is going to be a tenor banjo treat on TG4 (Irish) television this Sunday at 21:30. A local Mullingar player 10 yr old Eoiffe Dunleavy will be making her television debut.
The way I look at it, the neck is widening under the strings anyway which is making it stronger. I always keep the same thickness from the nut to where the heel curve starts.

Here tis. Scale is 23” (E) to 24” (G). Jumbo body, Cocobolo veneer, gotoh tuners & LR Baggs pickup. It’s a custom built by Emerald Guitars in County Donegal. Really really nice...
I have the Harley Benton among my collection of tenors. It’s a nice guitar that sounds good in CGDA and just ok in GDAE. I replaced the tuners with good quality banjo ones. I wouldn’t be confident...
Follow ProfChris’s advice and you shouldn’t have a problem. It is surprising how much more tension a string will withstand when it has been brought up to tension gradually.
When I played in a Concert Band we tuned to the oboe. This is because the oboe has the least amount of tuning flexibility/range of all instruments.
I added a photo of it to the - What's on my bench thread.
I started off on the tenor guitar a few years ago so whenever I tried Mandolin I found my fingers were too scrunched up so I ordered a special built 17" mahogany mandola & tuned it up to Mandolin. To...
Well the d'addario .007's arrived yesterday from Germany. I bought 15 of them just to be sure to have enough spares. I put one onto the 17.5" E on my newly built banjo Mandolin, went very slowly &...
A nice way to compensate for neck dive!
