  1. Re: Students in Mike Marshall's Artist Works course right now?

I'm a member for the second time. Mike Marshall's work ethic is off the chart, just as is his skill level.

It's a good way to organize your practice and getting feedback from Mike Marshall is...

Re: You don't know a fiddle tune until...

If you have the ability to practice two or three hours a day, you can get that good on every fiddle tune you know. Thank goodness you don't have to be that good to enjoy playing.

Nice job on all three. I guess if I had to pick one it would be #2.

I never realized those tunes were the same, good catch JL277g.

There's this Ricky Skaggs video you can watch him chop pretty good.

Chop chords will eventually work for you if you keep trying.

Also, watch Sam Bush and Adam Steffey for some...

    Re: Reliance on scales

As far as I'm concerned, you can't go wrong playing melody. If you know your scales you can play melodies by ear easier and better.

He does take a break every now and then on the show. He could pick fine and was a great singer.

Mike Compton has a list. He says there are over 600 Monroe recordings. One thing I don't see mentioned ever is how hard it is to play solos like Monroe where he played on the G and D strings so...

Check out the Gretsch at Guitar Center if for some reason that's where you want to buy. A pretty good mandolin for $239 I think.

    Re: Beginner Pick

Get some Fender medium and heavies. You can buy them anywhere and they work fine. Then try the others you normally see listed as mandolin picks as you get a chance.

Fifteen minutes a day won't cut it. You will only be able to learn very simple music at that rate of practice.
