  5. Re: Mike Compton demonstrates his 2008 Duff F-5 mandolin

I know what you're getting at. However, it's a chunky, percussive and very rhythmic sound that always draws me in. Mike goes for soul and feel over crystal clean technical playing. Listen to those...

    Re: James tailpiece engraving

Weldon Lister did this for my Kimble 2 point a few years ago. Great guy to work with and he does great work. If I ever part ways with this Kimble, the tailpiece isn’t going with it! :) Too bad if...

If I did buy one the first thing I'd do is remove that ridiculous pick guard.

Re: Flinner and Walsh in Galway NY

I did see Joe's "If not now when" tour show and he was playing the same mandola, so apologies to Lawrence Smart and Joe K Walsh, that thing has a huge warm sound.

Flinner and Walsh in Galway NY

Caught Matt Flinner and Joe K Walsh in the very small Upstate NY town of Galway, Matt played a lot of banjo, I forgave him for that as they covered Don Stover's "Things in Life" wonderfully.
    Joe...

This must explain those string bass players using paint can lids….:))
  19. Re: Does Pick Size and Instrument Size have any Correlation?

For what it’s worth, I’ve always used different sized picks on different sized instruments.
  20. Re: Does Pick Size and Instrument Size have any Correlation?

It’s all up to player preference. I’m opposite from you as I like Large triangle (346) shapes for mandolin and smaller teardrop (351) shapes for guitar.

Re: 5301 F Chord on Mandolin to Mandola

What are you looking for - an open-ish fingering for an F chord or Bb chord?

For an F chord on mandola, you would play the equivalent of a C chord on mandolin. For an open-ish...

Re: 5301 F Chord on Mandolin to Mandola

Its a bit stretchy on a 17 inch for me anyway,

for Bb on mandola I tend to use 2301 or 5335 or 5785

but if 5301 works by all means.
  24. Re: Is "Mr Sun Plays Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite" bluegrass

Sony, or Apple, doesn’t know from bluegrass music. As far as they know, anything played with a acoustic stringed instruments without a drummer is bluegrass.

They are not alone in that. Check out...
