Re: Lutherie as an art form

The definition of "art" can vary depending on whether you're talking about the pedantic chest-beating of stuffy academics or simply individual creative expression. I tend to greatly prefer the...

    Re: Ideal scale length

I play on instruments with 21.5" and 20.125". but they are tuned GDAE or DGBE. I am used to the shorter scale length and they work well in 5ths tuning.

    Re: Ideal scale length

I am much more comfortable using a 20 -21” scale for CGDA, it just makes the tension more even and relaxed.
I personally think GDAE works better on a 22-24” scale otherwise the G feels...

    Re: Ideal scale length

CGDA is all I have played on my Blueridge (23") tenor as yet. I broke a few A strings starting out. So I ordered a boatload of my faves from Thomastik as well as some lesser spare As. Haven't broken...

    Re: Ideal scale length

My uninformed opinion is 21" for CGDA and 23" for GDAE. YMMV.

    Re: Tonewood

Exactly. Bob Benedetto built a nice archtop from "pallet wood" that sounded almost as nice as his normal guitars made from high dollar tonewoods.

    Re: Rough Fret Edges

This happens all the time; fingerboards shrink and frets protrude. The remedy is to mill (file) the ends flush with the edge of the fingerboard and then finish (file rounded and smooth) the fret...

    Re: Screws for tuner buttons

    “Wentworth”? D’you mean “Whitworth”?

Useless fact for those interested; Joseph Whitworth (the screw thread man) lived in a large house just down the road from where Newtone strings are made today!

Steve, looking at fan frets blows my simple mind. That sunburst is perfect!

Bravo Dave - well done. It is a work of beauty. I hope it gives you musically, what you were after. Congratulations.
  15. Re: Octave Mandolin action/string height question

Rather than supply specifications, I would suggest you adjust the string height as low as is possible without your personal playing style causing the strings to unpleasantly rattle on the frets. This...

Beware of broad generalization and oversimplification.

Scale length is only one variable in tone. Body depth plays a huge role, as do different tone woods, but ultimately its the builder that...

Looks lovely! My David Lim mandolin is sycamore back and sides, but British sycamore so directly related to maple. Really sweet sounding.
