Yes. Steve Gilchrist & Paul Duff are some stiff competition!
Martin made spectacular guitars in the 30s that are still the apex of flat top guitar building 90 years later. Today Martin still hasn't been able to equal them.....
Those who might choose to spend...
For a $20k mandolin I'd be looking at the competition & Gibson wouldn't be at the top of my list. In alphabetical order Ellis, Gilchrist, Heiden....
& it sounded pretty darn fine at Wintergrass this past weekend!
"Flatwound" strings are polished smooth, (so there's less finger noise) & you can't see the windings. Some guitar string brands have different colour ball ends....but if the strings are silk...

That's right, but he was also a musician. IMO there's something to the design of benchmark instruments; the F5 for example and the Martin OM. Changing the body depth changes an instrument's tonal...

Having had an Ellis A5, I can tell you it's not an installation problem. Builders have had issues with the Waverly A model tuners. But it's worth talking with both Tom Ellis & Stewmac. Tom's customer...

2cd set "Bluegrass Mandolin Extravaganza" .....this and the 6 Bluegrass Album Band CDs will keep you busy until you're ready to dive into the five Bear Family Bill Monroe box sets.......
5 years ago was 2018.... my F5 artist was $11k in 2009. I'm pretty sure Michael's A models weren't $5k, because I bought an Ellis from Tom in 2011 for $5.8k because I couldn't afford the Heiden A....
I've had both and although there are exceptional Collings, Heidens are superalive. I've never heard an ok one. Michael's mandolin will I believe always hold value or increase. They are real...
I would spend some time practicing in cycles. Set your metronome... then play some fiddle tunes for example playing AABB, rhythm, then switching to picking AABB, then back to rhythm. In a jam there...
