This ^^^ I use Burts Bees hand salve, as I get very dry skin. After a week, my strings are black with grime and dead. Been wiping them down, which helps. Doesn't bother me too much, I like dead...
Oh yeah....I would say most of it is banjolin....Sounds like that's mostly what Papa Charlie played.
Thanks everyone for responding so far. I'm using my 2017 Duff A5.
When I was learning country blues guitar and got heavily into it, I bought a 1923 Oscar Schmidt Sovereign. It definitely has...
An interesting topic came up in my mandolin lesson recently. I'm taking lessons with Compton, and our emphasis has been the blues alá Papa Charlie McCoy, The Two Poor Boys, Prater & Hayes, etc....
Ummm...there was only one Loar A5...so yep.
Violin makers have been copying Strads and Guarneri's for hundreds of years...it's a tribute......you get it or you don't....unless a builder passes it...
I got a Duff A and that was the game changer for me.
I would of been completely happy with the A5L, but the Duff is on a whole other level.
I owned this one for a few years. It's a good one. Decent volume with a woody tone.
The pickguard and EVO frets were done by Steve at Cumberland Acoustics.
Our little 15 year old Minke is feeling sick again.....we think it may be old age, or some type of stomach cancer.
Not in pain that we can tell....but in her safe place today.

Agreed! Congrats to the OP.....I was eyeing that one up for a while!
Good work Don!
I've been learning these songs as well....they are super fun to play!
Let's get these guys some funds....anything will do!
As y'all know, these are unprecedented times, and Mike and the band will appreciate it very much!!!
Just wanted to pass this on for anyone interested. Stay well everybody!! :mandosmiley:
"Hello Hello!
I hope you are well and HEALTHY! I wanted to invite you to a really great show happening...
I wish....that was taken while the wife and I were on vacation in Mendocino County.
I was practicing and set it there, and my wife saw it and took a pic.
Well I'll be..... just found out this great mandolin I own, is on the Grammy award winning Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper record "Tall Fiddler".
Builder is Gary Vessel. I bought this instrument...
Round core strings are generally less tension for a given gauge.
Newtone strings masterclass mediums have as much, or close to, the same tension as Daddario lights.
Curt Mangan also makes round...
It used to be Mason William's guitar.
Mark and Tyler are incredible pickers.
I've met and picked with Tyler. Super nice fella and incredibly talented on just about any string instrument.
I know last year they took some time off, and were back within a month.
Hopefully that's the case again.
I think it sounds terrific...and I really like the vocal delivery....reminds me of Terry Allen. (check him out....interesting cat)
Mando sounds great as well as the guitfiddle.
Good job man!
My personal favorite for playing around the house, and with small groups is a Gary Vessel F5.
Superb tone, and handles all styles of playing with ease.

SO sorry that's a huge bummer.....here's to a speedy recovery.
I have really enjoyed ALL the videos this year!
AGF and the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum are the ones I visit daily.
I tend to prefer the UMGF.
+1
That side binding looks really cool!
I think it looks great!
Very cleanly cut and matches the aesthetic of the instrument very well IMO.
I believe the XT's are taking over from the EXP's.
The XT's sound pretty good and just a little different than the EXP's. Like they're a little bit "broken in" out of the box.
