tunearch's search engine is not working...
I can get tunearch.org to come up, the other appears to be down.
(cannot resist such a straight lead). "flying unruly fingers?" - well, play fast and you will have no time to flail them about. works for me. chicken and egg? make it work for you! but yes, there is...
A few thoughts - hope it helps :)
1. Play major scales but do not lift your fingers on the way up the scale - if your playing an A major scale for example, your 1st finger plays the A on the 2nd...
Forgive me if I plagarize myself from another recent thread, responding to the OP's thanks for helpfulness ...

You're not alone. I never go there because I found my "keeper" the first time out buying a mandolin after doing a ton of research, and being fortunate enough to have a budget for a good handmade...
Fortunately for us, there's plenty of guitar-porn still out there!
The site owner removed them for good reasons, and explained all this when the removal occurred. Use the search feature if you’re curious. And the OP, Billy Packard, is aware of this.
Editing to...
I see I'm again in a minority -- I check the forum daily, but almost never look at the classifieds.
Think of the time you save not drooling over guitars you’re not going to buy…
Take a stroll outside in the sunshine, smell the flowers, greet small woodland creatures…

I was doing some research on trying to find some French Canadian Folk Songs since we will be spending the summer in Quebec Province and yes, I did study some French in my education but sadly, can...
Yes, and I agree also with Eastern music. My family lived in Greece for 3 yrs when I was young and I loved the odd time signatures, 5/4, 7/8, 9/8. One of my favorite groups is the Bulgarian State...
Rummaging through some old hard disks recently and came across this mandolin-&-guitar arrangement of Calace's Moto perpetuo, recorded in 2007 in a Shanghai hotel lounge:

I'm just not trying to play all the notes, and in a way, fiddlers do the same.
Left hand speed can be the higher the less force is neccessary, and fiddlers have considerably less force to apply,...
It's not such a big jump from cittern tunings some people use.
For my octave mandolin I tune ADae, and in the past I have taken the top and bottom strings off an electric guitar and tuned it like...
Toomas, do you know the book Wohlfahrt Violin Studies Arranged for Mandolin by Jennifer Case? ~o)
Here's my .02. Play a tune you know with your left hand not pressing hard enough to get clear notes. You'll soon find out how little pressure it takes to get a clean note as you'll find some notes...
My transcription of Etude Op.45 Nr.4 by Franz Wohlfahrt (1833-1884), originally written for violin but also useful for mandolin. In the preface to Etudes Op.45 the maestro says:
If practiced...
Regarding trying to keep up with anyone playing anything, everyone is at a certain level in their playing, so there's that; yes, keep practicing.
But the other thing is what arrangement of a...
Busy weekend. I've been taking note of everyone's excellent advice, but haven't had a chance to weigh in.
I'm in a learning environment, so there are mixed abilities among all the instruments,...
An afterthought: To be fair to fiddlers, a fiddler might work for some time at mastering a complex tune or medley, using sophisticated techniques, then go to a "session" to find that fellow musicians...
My perspectives come from first being a fiddler and then going over to mainly mandolin. All of the above advice looks good to me. However the differences give each of he instruments different...
Well, if you leave the ITM and Scottish sessions and go to a jazz jam session, you'll need to be able to improvise!
But your point is well taken in terms of the musical context involved....
