I think Heiden Mandos don't get talked about all that much for the same reason Dudenbostel mandos don't get talked about that much. Most know they are top notch, both are arguably one of the 5 best...

I just finished up an "Emerald Burst" Sprite Two-Point and realized that this mandolin has given me so many chances to play with finishing and to build for different types of players.

A nice vid on ancient harp lutherie--possibly of interest to some here-

People will just "eat that up" be careful not to slip on the seeds...
Juicy!
Just a few pics of my newly finished F4. Sounds like an F4 but more sustain and volume. The neck is only extended to the 14th fret. X braced.
I think Bill Snyder is correct. But don't let that stop you from making it happen. Certainly it can be done.
More craziness along the lines of "purfling that came alive"...

We have been doing sound hole and relief carvings on instrument tops recently, and the Russian Firebird is a recent addition. Sitka top, Walnut neck and body.

I began my luthier journey a few months ago by starting my first mandolin. Since I own 2 F5's & having a longtime desire to have one, I decided on building an Oval F. Using the Siminoff plans for...
Violin bridge blanks are available "unfitted" and "fitted". Of course they should call the fitted ones "semi-fitted" because you still have to fit them, just not nearly as much work. I can see...
My very first Gibson was my 1919 whitefaced A-3 which I bought from Mandolin brothers in the late 1970s. It was the best-sounding A model on the mandolin wall at that time IMHO. It also was dear to...
Most glues, white, yellow, epoxy and hide are slippery so there is no issue there.
All of these glues will squeeze out of a joint, so there is no resistance. The only issue I can think of is...
Well, I had to do it. Just to amuse myself. More pics/clip here.

I've visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and I have studied reports on one hundred more. Only on Earth is there any talk of figured maple.”. Attributed to Vonnegut, 1969
How cool is that?!? I wonder what kind of music MonteRock's father played. It looks like an early country or rockabilly machine.
Cool time machine though! What a great pickup system! The mandolin was obviously played and loved a bit, no matter what year or make, I always have an instant respect for an instrument that was loved...
No need to laugh. It was an honest mistake. If you didn't know how a 1963 F5 differs from one made 40 years earlier, and if you didn't know that in the early '60s Gibson recycled a bunch of 5-digit...
Thanks, all. If you request the ebook between now and the first week of August I am going to be out of town in isolated places where Internet access is unpredictable. It may take a few days or so...
Just finished carving a few plates. My hands are really sore... from all that button-pushing... :-)
