  1. Re: Can you recommend an inexpensive beginner-friendly mandolin?

Get your mando a good set-up.
    A $3000 mandolin with a bad set-up is a monster! :)
A cheap mandolin with a good set-up will be a friend to you.

There’s a great free book on DIY set-ups by Rob...
  2. Re: Can you recommend an inexpensive beginner-friendly mandolin?

I will go revisit the video that Jim Garber recommends, but I'll toss in one possibility for a beginner mandolin. A dear friend, an accomplished professional violinist, came by the other day to meet...

This link may be of use to some. I couldn't find a list that met my needs so I put this together.

    Re: Oregon Coast picking scene

I am definitely looking to play with others more often. I am out on the coast often chasing salmon, halibut, and tuna often between May and September. I get that far south at least twice each fall.

  7. Re: Any Mandolin Players on the Southern Oregon Coast?

Helen - if you ever get up around Grants Pass, there's a pretty good jam at Wild River Pub on 3rd Thursdays. Lasts from 6-8pm or so.
  8. Re: Any Mandolin Players on the Southern Oregon Coast?

Helen - you're going to be very greatly missed here in Sequim! We've so much enjoyed our jam times with you and watching your rapid progress. Keep that great-grandpa's mandolin busy once you're all...

Re: When you start to get worse

This happens to me as well. A couple of thoughts. One, progress in any learning isn't linear. You leap ahead, slide back, inch forward again, stall out, leap ahead, etc. It's all part of the process....

Re: When you start to get worse

I agree, this can be a large part of it. I remember having moments where I would vent to my wife that I'm getting worse, and she disagreed. It's just that I started expecting more out of myself, or...

Re: When you start to get worse

Lots of assumptions here, like you're properly warming up and playing in 45-60 minute sessions with breaks, and instrument properly setup. Is this a teacher giving you 2 new tunes a week? Mine...

Re: When you start to get worse

It could well be that you are not getting worse but your discernment is getting better.

Try not to overthink it. You can think yourself into a corner. Just play. And then play some more later....

Re: When you start to get worse

I've experienced similar. Can be caused by a variety of issues:
    1) trying to play too fast
    2) tired muscles
    3) tired brain
    4) trying to learn too many new tunes whereas previous tunes not quite...
