It's either a Dawg or a Golden Gate for me.

    Re: New Mandola

Same here, although it does depend on the mandolin and the strings.

I have a mandolinetto with nylon mandolin strings and even the high strings are kind of docile.

    Re: Pick Talk

I used the same tortoiseshell pick and have for years. I have a backup, a 2mm, and two 1mm jazz style ones for my wife’s guitar too but I always use the same one.

    Re: Pick Talk

When my pick sound changes it's almost always my picking attack that has changed.

A few minutes playing around and I can get the sound back.

I’ve been using Madura Tortoiseshell 1mm and, sometimes, 2mm triangle picks. Got some of their 1mm Jazz style too. The triangles have nice rounded corners and I angle them for a bit more curve...

Correction: My new Blue Chip is actually a TAD60 3R (1.5) which does match up to the size and shape of the V-Pick Saga. I have been playing with it constantly and it feels and sounds great. Glides...

Love the Black Wegen M150! I did just receive my new Blue Chip TPR60 (1.5) with only the simple round bevel. It is the luxury version of the Golden Gate Large triangle X-Stiff. It is a Large...

I use the Apollo Reischman picks and love them. For me, the sharper the corners on a pick, the more pronounced the clicking sound. I've tried them all, many times over, and keep coming back to the...

    Re: Pick Talk

Rounded corners just don't seem to work for the way I play and the groups I play in. Makes it more difficult to be heard. Both by me and others. At least in an acoustic setting. And that does not...

    Re: Pick Talk

I have a Blue Chip TAD-3R with a simple round bevel (no speed bevel) on order. This one is the size of the CT 55, but it has rounded corners and is 1.5 thick rather than the CT’s 1.4.

You can tremolo with a pointy pick just fine, but you have to angle it more.

I use Wegen M200 on an oval soundhole mandolin but I also use TF140 when I play f hole one as far as sound is concerned.

Nice music and mandolin playing, Toomas! Your flatback sounds very fine in your hands.

    Re: Scottish Mandolins

You are correct, Allen. The Great Highland Bagpipe does indeed sound in Bb, though pipers always name the nine notes as G, A, B, C# D E, F# G and A - in other words A mixolydian; the three drones,...

There was the Corries' "combolin", built by Roy Williamson himself.

I didn't notice a lot of takeup by other players though.
