    Re: Thoughts on keys.

Paul told me this when taking some lessons from him many moons back. Stupid me didn’t believe him (A flat HAS to be harder than A!!!). After really getting into bebop and playing with players who...
  2. Re: How to practice: Play very slow | Tal Wilkenfeld and Lex F

It is my belief that you don't JUST practice slow, but you have to do it ENOUGH and CONSISTENTLY to get excellent co-ordination between your hands, which is where quality tone comes from.

    Re: Improving tone.

I think you need to spend at least some time every practice playing slower than 50% of normal speed. You don't just practice this way, but you do need to devote a decent percent of your practice to...

    Re: Little help? Henderson's Recordame

I play this in 1st position. You need to just play more in flat keys to get used to how they work, it’s where jazz tunes live!

As my friend, swing fiddle great Paul Anastasia used to tell me...

    Re: Love for Ovals

I prefer the oval over f hole for jazz playing. Much less percussive and makes jazz phrasing much easier to my ear. Plus I like the warm fuller sound.

  12. Re: Books that show which scales to play over certain chords

A short cut version is to

1 write down the notes in the chord
2 Start on the root note of the chord and find one note between each chord tone
3 Use this as a “short cut” or “cheating” scale

In the Barry Harris method, he covers this. You can see this here:

Re: Tube preamp for direct e mando recording?

I also picked up an Art Studio V3 Tube MP and it is decent, though definitely not the UA 610. Will use the Art as a tube in front of my amp on live gigs.

I also found the 610 on Craigslist for...

There is no "right way" to absorb Barry's system. It helps to start with the "basics", which is what I teach in the first say 10 videos. Then find sounds you like and practicing getting...

    Like Bill said:

    Ab7 = Ab C Eb Gb

    1. The B on top with C and F# underneath sounds very jazzy, A D13 chord!
