About attikaorchestra
ATTIKA was founded in 1993 by Aris Dimitriadis, its Artistic Director. Since 1997 it operates under the hospices of the non-profit Music Association ERATO.
Aris Dimitriadis has been working with Mandolin Orchestras for more than 25 years. He created Attika to fill a quality gap in the contemporary Greek Mandolin scene by building on a long tradition of excellence and professionalism, which in the past made Greek orchestras renowned internationally. ATTIKA’s main objective is to expand the appeal of Mandolin music internationally. With a well-researched repertoire, ATTIKA is following on the steps of the great Italian and French orchestras of this genre, drawing also on Greek compositions of 18th to 21st century. ATTIKA is the only Greek orchestra interpreting music that covers the entire spectrum of the last five centuries; from the Renaissance to the Italian Canzonetta, from Baroque to Romanticism, from Classical to Modern. ATTIKA Plucked Orchestra has performed in Turkey (Cemal Resit Rey Konsert Salonu and Istanbul Technical University), in Bulgaria (Academy of Music Plovdiv, Georgi Atanasov Hall in Pazardjik), and in Greece (National Opera House in Athens, Palace of Great Magister in Rhodes, “Parnassos” Literary Society, Trianon cinema, Open Air Theatre of the Holy Cave of the Apocalypse etc). Moreover, ATTIKA has participated in festivals as 5th International Mandolin Festival of Pazardjik, 12th Festival of Sacred Music in Patmos, 10th International Festival of Rhodes “Music Days”, 1st Early Music Festival in Paros, Mandolin Orchestra Festival in Kefalonia, etc.
Benefit concerts have been given for the Greek school of Imvros, the Animal Protection Society of Aegina and the Greek Orthodox Church in New York City Saint Nicolas.
Worth mentioning is the first international performance of Pavlos Ventouras “Pyles” in collaboration with the Greek Composers Association and Nikolaos Mantzaros “Overture No5” arranged by Victor Kioulaphides, the recordings of Vasiliki Nika’ s “Anafora sto Miki” (“Report to Mikis”) and Christos Tsiamoulis “Sas ta pan alloi?” (“Shall we sing for you?”) Greek carols in collaboration with Savvina Giannatou.
ATTIKA’s main composition is a and b mandolins, mandola alto, mandola tenore, mandoloncello, guitars, double bass and piano or cembalo.
