Oops, yesterday slipped by me.... we were finally getting snow here! This week's winner is The Maids of Feakle (I had it misspelled in the poll!) Here's a link to two settings of the tune on thesession.org Here's the video that Jill linked to in the poll discussion: I see looking this tune up on YouTube that it's often played in a set!
love the Donie Nolan vid, he's a fine singer as well.
Lovely tune! It was a lot of fun to learn.
Nice one mandoween!
Very good, mandoween, and you must do more of those slides.
Nice playing, thanks for sharing.
Nice playing, M.
Thanks Jill, Bertram, dusty, and John!
That's a good one, mandoween! You play it with a nice lilt/rhythm that brings the tune to life, an enjoyable listen. And yeah that slide is cool too!
This one took an awful lot of practice to get up to speed, so well done Mandoween.
Nice one, MM.
The wet tuning gives it a jaunty feeling, Maudlin, and the 4-square rhythm goes with it, too. I picture Phil Collins' measured steps...
Nice job maudlin mandolin, nice steady pace to the triplets thrown in as well!
Maybe a dumb question Bertram, what's a "wet tuning"?
Wet tuning is an idiom borrowed from the world of accordions, meaning a slightly different pitch in unison pairs which creates a tone with a pulse, which can be reproduced with paired string instruments such as the mandolin. Beautiful wet tuning requires more thorough adjustment than exact unison (aka dry tuning). There is one thread on that here, but there are more.
Thanks, Bertram. I've heard of that tuning practice but forgotten the term if I ever heard it.
Nice job, maudlin! I like how well you articulated all the notes. That's definitely something I want to work on in my own playing.
Thanks for the kind words, maudlin and JL277z!!
well played mandoween and maudlin, great tune but tough enough to record, i just couldn't manage to play it twice through without blundering. sorry about the wrong title, not sure if that was a Freudian slip or corrective text
Fine triplets there, G!
Lovely stuff Lawrence! Great pace to it.
Three good submissions.
Fair and fearless indeed, Lawrence, with a wide stride and no need to hide.
cant stop playing this one at the minute, so thought i would have another crack at it , this time on the forester and hopefully in tune had a lot of fun with this one, the dairy maid goes well after it, had intended to record both but got cold feet
Great stuff Lawrence and aways a treat to hear that Forster in action!
