I am working on a song with tabs (Greensleeves). It says to play in second position. Does this just mean to move my fingers up the fret board 2 frets? Do I play the same frets but just with different fingers? Thank-you for your help.

second position means move your fingers up the fret board so that finger 1 is playing the 2 frets that finger 2 would have played in first position. it also means to me that instead of finding notes between open and 7th fret inclusive, I find all notes between 3rd and 10th fret inclusive.

Michael, you are correct that the fret numbers stay the same, no matter what position you are in.

Do you know what key the piece is in? Second position is helpful for Bb, F, or C major. (Also for B, F#/Gb or C#/Db.) It's also helpful if the tune goes up to the C on the E courses, but no higher.
