"An Páistín Fionn (The Fair-Haired Child)" -- Irish slow air This arrangement is from the free ebook "A Winter's Tale 3", posted by Evelyn in this thread on the forum: Link Played on three mandolins and tenor guitar. 1921 Gibson Ajr mandolin (x3) Vintage Viaten tenor guitar Martin
lovely Martin
Yes, very pleasant. This one John Hinde style cliche postcard picture of the red-haired kids with the donkey&turf creels teleported me right back to the 80s
Thanks a lot, both -- it's a fun tune to play! Well spotted, Bertram. Not just "John Hinde style", but actual John Hinde. Link here (there's another postcard from the same photo session here). This site has more John Hinde postcards than you could ever imagine: 500 from Ireland alone (including some published by but not taken by Hinde): http://www.johnhindecollection.com/j...d_archive.html Martin
That's really nice Martin. Captures the feel of the piece beautifully. You are amassing a fine collection of recordings that are very polished.
Here's another of my re-recordings of pieces we (used to) play regularly during our weekly meets. Same arrangement from Evelyn as my 2016 recording, but using mandocello instead of third mandolin for the low harmony. Also a touch faster to make the melody flow better. Martin
Really nice, thanks Martin. Nicely played, Martin.
The mandocello adds a lovely depth to this version, Martin. A fine tune and performance.
Thanks, all -- I really enjoy this tune, and Evelyn's arrangement makes it all fit together. Simon: There seem to be several tunes of that name with no obvious relationship. In addition to a waltz and a jig, there is also a hornpipe, a slow air and a song. For what it's worth, the tune I'm playing, from Evelyn's arrangement, is written in 6/8 time and has no obvious similarity to either the hornpipe or the slow air in the versions I have heard online, nor to the song recorded by Niamh Parsons. Martin
Sounds great, thanks also for the reminder of the book. -I’m almost at the stage where I can actually read it!
I really like this Martin. Lots of layers add the dimension that takes it from a simple waltz to a wonderful piece of music.
Sounds fine, the way the melody soars above the other voices.
Here’s one of the other versions of the same name. https://youtu.be/mx4bdV0-obo
