Here's me lovely 2011 Mike Black A2z in action. Lads and lasses, this is one of THE nicest oval hole mandolins I've ever played. Haven't put it down since it got here, it's a beaut! Here's a great wee jig, nice and simple and a lovely rolling feel to it. Just learnt it off so it's played straight thru with no ornaments etc. The ABC's from thesession.org, who have it under an alternate name, "Linnanes": X: 1 T: Linnane's M: 6/8 L: 1/8 R: jig K: Emin BAB EEE|BAB d^cd|BAB DDE|FED FGA| BAB EEE|BAB def|edB AFA|BEE E2A:| |:Bee edB|def afd|edd dBA|Bdd d^cd| Bee edB|def afd|edB AFA|BEE E3:||
That's one heck of a mandolin, Jill! (Also one fine mandolin player playing it!)
Jill, congratulations on the new mandolin! It sounds fantastic! I can't remember; is this the one with the Virzi? Your playing is stellar as always. Happy for you!
Another very fine jig Jill. I hope #11 will sound as nice when it arrives. The sad part is I'll never play it as beautifully as you. Don. #8 was Virzi-less. Gary
Cheers for the kind words lads!
Lively instrument and playing as usual, Jill. I know this melody as a song, here's the lyrics: The Rollicking Boys Around Tandragee Good luck to all here now barring the cat That sits in the corner there smelling a rat O wheesht your philandering girls and behave And saving you presence, I'll chant you a stave I come from the land where the pritties grow big And the boys neat and handy can swirl in a jig And the girls they would charm your heart for to see Those darling colleens around Tandragee So here's to the boys who are happy and gay Singing and dancing and tearing away Rollicksome, frollicksome, frisky and free We're the rollicking boys around Tandragee No doubt you have heard of Killarney I'm sure And sweet Innishowen for a drop of the pure Dublin's the place for the strawberry beds And Donnybrook Fair for the cracking of heads Have you e'er seen an Irishman dancing palltog How he faces his partner and turns up his brogue He shakes at the buckle and bends at the knee They're wonderful dancers in Tandragee Here's to the boys who are happy and gay Singing and dancing and tearing away Rollicksome, frollicksome, frisky and free We're the rollicking boys around Tandragee Now the oul jaunting car is an elegant joult And Derry's a place that is famed for a hoult Among the green bushes that grow in Tyrone And the County Fermanagh for muscle and bone But for feasting and dancing and fun at the fair Sure there's no one can match with the Rakes of Kildare Green Erin's my country, the gem of the sea But the gem of oul Ireland is Tandragee Here's to the boys who are happy and gay Singing and dancing and tearing away Rollicksome, frollicksome, frisky and free We're the rollicking boys around Tandragee O where is the man, either Christian or Turk Could equal the bold Robert Emmett or Burke O where is the lawyer can speak up like Dan The devil another, bad luck to the one And where is the singer can sing like Tom Moore Whose melodies charm all dull care from your door But we'll beat them all yet boys, and that you will see For we're raring fine fellows round Tandragee So here's to the boys who are happy and gay Singing and dancing and tearing away Rollicksome, frollicksome, frisky and free We're the rollicking boys around Tandragee
Great sound there, no wonder you can't stop playing it. It's got that great oval-hole hollow quality to the midrange. Very pronounced without sounding muddy. And the highs really ring out very clear and fine. Just wonderful.
Your description of the sound pretty much hits the nail on the head Brent! Mike makes fantastic instruments, as you well know yourself!
Great sound, Jill, and a cracking tune yet again.
Cheers John!
Yeah, I might want to own an oval if I could get one that sounds like yours. Who knows, maybe by the time he gets to #48 or so I'll be back in the market. Maybe.
I like this jig a lot so I decided to learn it today. Coincidentally I just got my Gibson Fern-V back from Big Joe's Guitarworks today where they did a fret job and set it up again. I'm playing it slowly as I am literally not up to speed with this tune yet, but I really like it. In honor of Jill I am not showing my head either. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KWRgWADf2M
loved this tune/song since first hearing aidan crossey sing it, more recently the four winds do a fanastic version
Beautiful clarity, rhythm, and energy! Good to see and hear you back.
That sounds great, Lawrence. Good to listen to 2011 recordings of Jill and mikeyes, too.
Great delivery of a fine tune, Lawrence. Nice to hear the tune without any backing too.
Well played beautiful tune. And those light, graceful triplets again.
Great stuff Lawrence!
