This week's overwhelming winner is Stony Point, which was submitted as being both Old Time and Bluegrass. Here's notation on abcnotation.com Here's a youtube video of Tony Rice Here's a video of Ian Walsh doing a fiddle lesson for the tune. Here's a fiddle and banjo rendition
Tony Rice Bluegrass guitar tab: http://www.bluegrassguitar.com/pdf/StonyPoint.pdf The submission stating that it’s Bluegrass or OldTime is 100% INCORRECT! -it’s actually a beautiful Scottish tune... and what luck, it’s a jig! http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/sc...tony_point.htm
Boy it sure is reminiscent of a tune I've heard a lot at Irish sessions too, I can't place what it is though.
I think this song is having an identity crisis..
Maybe so, there’s even a Fashion Park at Stony Point (Richmond, Virginia). Here’s the banjo TAB: https://www.hangoutstorage.com/banjo...5101552020.pdf AND there are ukulele teachers who live in Stony Point, one of whom speaks Chinese and French. BUT no mandolin tab YET...
Here's the best thing about "Stony Point" aka "Wild Horses at Stony Point": It also goes by the name "Pigtown Fling." I don't know about you, but I think "Pigtown Fling" is a far classier title.
Pigtown Fling? Now I want to play this tune! (OldTime is my favourite) http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/am...town_fling.htm Here’s another: https://youtu.be/JeUDZlA_5gc
Pigtown Fling? Hell yes. There's a 3rd part in the Fiddle Fakebook and all these start on the B part as written there, including the Tony Rice version that omits the 3rd part too. I guess that's why it's a fake book.
There’s more... Here’s a Scots version from thesession: X :1 M: 4/4 L: 1/8 R: highland fling K: Gmaj |: (3DEF | G2 g>e (3ded e>d | B>dg>e d>BA>B | G2 g>e (3ded e>d | B>GA>F G2 :| |: (3Bcd | B>ee>d e>fg>e | f>g (3agf g>fe>d |1 B>ee>d e2 g>e | f>ga>f g2 :| 2 G2 g>e (3ded e>d | B>GA>F G2 || And here’s a cool old recording of a 4 part version: https://www.slippery-hill.com/system...mp3?download=1
First bit's like Mrs MacLeod of Raasay.
My fling at Pigtown.
Really nice Mike! Certainly got the ‘yeharrr!’ foot stomping spirit there, well done.
Very nice Mike! You have a good strong picking method - something I am trying to improve since I'm a real lightweight picker which barely registers on the recording devices.
Thanks Mike. Great rhythm!
That's exemplary picking right there.
Great strong playing with a good pulse to it. Cool variations too. Yeeh, Mike!
Finally got around to making a video of this one. Sound is from the video camera mic. Backup band is iReal Pro. Should have straighten up my shirt. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bezKlRlJzYs
That is very nice Don. Clear and clean pickin'.
Really fine, Mike & Don. Definitely has a "fling" feel the way you're both playing it. Another one to add to the list!
Two fine, driving versions, gents. Thanks for posting.
I enjoyed your version too, Don.
Really nice Don, another foot tapper!
Nicely played, Don!
This really is a fun tune!
You make it sound jaunty and effortless, and I admire you for that ability!
Nicely done, Simon, on both instruments!
This a is really good Simon. I admire your effortless playing, not to mention the shorts and socks in the shoes. How is Feather? btw.
Well done, Simon, enjoyed the foot percussion as well as the fine playing.
Thanks Dennis Frithjof and Ginny. It’s interesting that I can only get the jaunty rhythm if I move my legs at the same time while playing stronger on all the upbeats. Even here though I don’t think there’s enough swing in it, at least in the A part where there’s the alternating accented downbeat to upbeat. When played really slow it’s a great rhythm practice tune. Oh, Feather is HOT. My daughter chose her because she was the only kitten with a thick warm angora type coat. She loves to be outside even when it snows. Nice for me too because I don’t have to worry about her, but summers here can be blistering hot so she lives underground or on the old stone stairway most of the day at least. Very strange for a cat too is that if there’s a heavy storm then she wants to go out. Cats hate getting wet, right? Well she’s no exception, doesn’t like it at all but still, out she goes. We played with her a lot when she was young so she loves to hunt. I wonder if mice and rats get flooded out in the heavy rain. Thanks Mike and Don for the encouraging versions.
Simon, you could put up a kiddie pool with ice for Feather. Off topic, sorry ppl. Back to music.
