I posted this up on the forum, too. May 1-4 in Lawndale, N.C. (right outside of Shelby). Looks like a good time, even though their focus is on banjo (go figure!). The headliner lineup includes Boxcars, Steeldrivers, Grascals, Traveling McCourys. That's some awesome mandolin players, and just a lot of really good music. I'm gonna travel on Thursday, but I plan on being there the other 3. Check out http:\\5stringfest.com

O.K., a quick review from last weekend. I only went Fri. and Sun., but heard some GREAT music, in a beautiful setting. Friday was for my favorite band, The Steeldrivers. As usual, they put on a wonderful show, despite some sound/monitor problems with Gary's guitar. (occasional boom-feedback) There were a few other acts I really enjoyed, but My biggest slap-me-in-the-face-and-make-me-cheer was a gentleman from Portland, Or named Tony Furtado. He was solo, and pld banjo and slide guitar. His banjo work was decidedly un-bluegrass, with a round, full tone you don't hear much from a 5 string. Very tasteful and original. What knocked me out, tho, was his slide guitar. This guy is a killer! Stinging tone, quick, clean, and soulful. He really had me on my feet and rocking. I'm gonna keep up with this guy.
Missed the Travelin' McCoureys on Saturday, my dad needed a day off. Sunday, saw The Boxcars, Grascals, and J.D. Crowe (with the Boxcars). Adam Steffey is just a master. Love his style and sound, and the chance to hear him live just proved what I thought. Danny Roberts is another good'un. Loved his playing, and the Grascals put on an excellent show. Even brought up Danny's 13 yr old daughter to sing her version of Allison Krause's version of Bad Co.'s "Oh Atlanta. She performs this on Danny's new solo project "Nighthawk". The young lady has some talent, she did a great job. All-in-all, a wonderful weekend of music and fun. The big shocker, with the lineup advertised, was the exceptionally poor turnout. Maybe 300 people Friday, no more than 200 on Sunday. Made it easy to get a great seat, tho.
